Base salary: $90,000 - $110,000

At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving innovative, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people.

The Lynn Systems Immunology Group is a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team that employs computational and multi-omic experimental approaches to investigate complex systems such as the immune system and different cancers. The group is headed by Prof. David Lynn, a Matthew Flinders Professor in Systems Immunology at Flinders University. Prof. Lynn’s team is based at SAHMRI where he heads the Computational and Systems Biology Program, one of 17 research programs at the institute.

We are seeking an experienced Research Officer/Postdoctoral Fellow in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology to support projects within the cancer systems biology and systems immunology areas. Prior experience in at least some of the following areas is essential: analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data; multi-omics data integration, network and pathway biology; cancer systems biology; and/or machine learning methods. Active collaboration and the ability to manage multiple different projects simultaneously is essential. Reporting to the Director Computational & Systems Biology Program, the position will also work closely in collaboration with other researchers including the Prostate Cancer Group at SAHMRI.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the analysis and integration of multi-omic datasets (e.g. RNAseq, ATAC-seq, ChIPseq, spatial omics data) across a variety of different projects including in prostate cancer research.
  • Implement and develop efficient pipelines/approaches for the analysis of these multi-omics data and where necessary develop new custom bioinformatics methods/approaches.
  • Lead the writing of publications relating to the projects.
  • Collaborate with other researchers and students in the Lynn Systems Immunology and Butler Prostate Cancer groups to support the bioinformatics components of their projects.
  • Assist in the smooth running of projects and the wider group.
  • Contribute to development of competitive funding applications.

About You

The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

  • MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics, computer science, physics, statistics or other relevant discipline.

Essential experience, knowledge and skills

  • A minimum of 2 years experience in genomics/NGS bioinformatics fields.
  • Have a strong track record in Bioinformatics as evidenced by prior publications in high impact journals in the field.
  • Have expertise in several of the following areas: bulk RNAseq, ATACseq, ChIPseq, single RNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, metagenomics, multi-omics data integration, network analysis, data visualisation.
  • Have significant prior experience with at least one of the following scripting languages: bash, R, Python and Perl.
  • Be a highly collaborative person, a strong team player, and an excellent communicator.
  • Have the ability to work in an organised, methodical way and to manage multiple ongoing projects.
  • Have attention to detail and a desire to understand a project and the intricacies of the data analysis.
  • Have demonstrated problem solving and communication skills.

Highly desirable experience, knowledge and skills

  • Experience in the analysis of other omic's data e.g. metabolomics, proteomics
  • Prior experience working in a high-performance computing environment
  • Knowledge of biological systems, with experience in immunology/cancer biology being particularly desirable.
  • Prior experience in machine learning.
  • Prior experience in cancer systems biology
  • Prior experience developing bioinformatics software (e.g. R packages; Cytoscape apps or standalone tools).

Special Requirements

  • Some out of hours work may be required.

Everything we do is underpinned by our core values and our institute is dedicated to grow a culture that pursues, enables and demands research excellence. We are proud of the work we do and work hard as a team to make a positive difference to the community.  Our values of excellence, innovation, courage, integrity and teamwork are what help us achieve our goals. If these are also your values and goals, apply today.

As a not-for-profit organisation, SAHMRI employees can access salary packaging options up to $15,900.
