Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is an open-cut mine that is accountable for over 20% of the world's manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963

This role is a permanent position on a 4:3 roster, FIFO from Darwin or Cairns.
As the Safety Specialist, you will be responsible for contributing to the development, and continuous improvement of GEMCO's safety management standards, procedures, tools and programs to enable the operation to effectively manage safety and risk.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:
- Develop and implement safety improvement initiatives
- Engage and collaborate with business stakeholders including front-line leaders to ensure programs developed are relevant and effective
- Visibly lead and coach safe behaviours, coaching leaders in hazard identification and risk management processes
- Accurate and timely reporting of safety performance, and the progress of safety improvement programs
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Solid experience working in an operational environment with safety
- Demonstrated ability to contributing change initiatives in a heavy industry environment
- Experience in open pit mine operations (desirable)
- Experience in identifying issues, analysing data and recommending practical improvement solutions
- Effective presentation and facilitation skills
- Tertiary qualification in Health and Safety
- Knowledge of The Work Health and Safety Act and Regulations
- Lead Auditor Qualification (desirable)
- Cert IV TAE (desirable)
