The Role

Centacare Catholic Family Services, based in Adelaide head office, is offering a part-time (0.6 FTE), ongoing position for a Student Counsellor. Reporting to the Manager of Counselling and Mediation Services/Team Leader, this role involves providing therapeutic support to children in Catholic Schools across metropolitan Adelaide and some country areas. As a key member of our team, your primary responsibility will be to build trusting relationships with students and provide them with therapeutic support tailored to their diverse needs. By addressing their challenges and fostering their well-being and development, you'll contribute positively to their academic and personal growth within the educational setting.

Responsibilities 

  • Apply thorough knowledge and understanding of child development and a clear child focused approach to all aspects of working with children and families
  • Work closely and proactively with the principal and/or leadership team of the school
  • Provide counselling support for students experiencing a range of difficulties with relationships, family or educational issues
  • Work with students and families in crisis
  • Provide referral pathways for students and families if needed
  • Develop, lead and direct group activities for students or parents as directed by the school leadership

About you

With a solid background in social work and a genuine passion for empowering young people, you possess the necessary skills and empathy to excel in this role. Your sincere dedication to helping students navigate various difficulties, whether in relationships, family, or education, drives your commitment to their well-being. You excel in building trust with students and effectively communicating with them, fostering an environment conducive to growth and support.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or other relevant field
  • Valid DHS working with children check (WWCC) – employers check
  • Evidence of right to work in Australia
  • Valid Australian Driver’s Licence
  • Ability to comply with COVID-19 vaccination requirements

Desirable

  • Responding to Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care training
  • Eligibility for membership with the relevant professional association (e.g. AASW, APS)
  • Experience in working with parents, children and young people
  • Experience working in a school setting
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Experience using Athena Penelope electronic client management system.
