The successful incumbent will be cross trained in the Core Haematology and Core Chemistry work units of the Core Laboratory. This is a multi-skilled position and is part of a team who work across the areas on a rotating shift roster. This position reports directly to the Supervising Scientist Core Haematology.

The incumbent will be responsible for performing a broad range of simple to complex investigations consistently and accurately, verification and validation of results and maintaining competence in the technical, instrumental, scientific, developmental and clinical interpretive aspects of the laboratory.
Your key responsibilities
You will be required to fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with the Queensland Public Service values.
- Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
- Perform and validate haematology, coagulation and chemistry investigations consistently and accurately, by maintaining competence in the scientific aspects of the laboratory units.
- Develop scientific knowledge and expertise through active learning within the team and by engaging in professional development activities.
- Work with independence and professionalism and demonstrate sound problem-solving skills.
- Work cooperatively and communicate effectively within the team and with clients, both internal and external to the laboratory.
- Develop a sound knowledge of NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements including performing quality control procedures, assisting with preparation of documents and completion of relevant statistics.
- Participate in quality and service improvement activities to continually improve patient care and client outcomes.
- Participate in continuing education and training sessions within the context of the role.
- Be prepared to engage flexibility in the scientific, technical and IT aspects of the position to help maintain Pathology Queensland as the preferred provider of Pathology Services for Queensland.
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:
- Experience in the performance of Haematology, Coagulation and/or Chemistry investigations.
- Theoretical knowledge and understanding of Haematology, Coagulation and Chemistry principles and procedures
- Proven ability to work independently, solve problems and show initiative in the workplace.
- Well-developed communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification.
- Awareness of the human resource management policies applicable to contemporary workplaces.
- The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the multi-scientist shift roster and will be required to work a combination of day and afternoon shifts within each fortnight.
Minimum qualification for Health Practitioner Level 3 (HP3):
- The successful applicant must hold a relevant degree in science or equivalent from a recognised University or other tertiary institution.
- Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and/or registration with the appropriate registration authority, including any necessary endorsements, to be provided to the employing service prior to the commencement of service. Overseas applicants are reminded that assessment of equivalence of qualifications is required.
- The Central Core Laboratory delivers a 24-hour, 7-day service. All newly appointed Core Laboratory staff are engaged with the understanding that they may be required to work any rostered shift within the 24-hour 7-day roster period, including overtime as required. This facilitates the progressive review of staffing and shift arrangements in the Core Laboratory to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
- It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
- Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
- Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
