Job description

  • Help Us Achieve Net Zero by 2030
  • Great Team Culture and Projects
  • $112,364.70 plus Super & Exceptional Entitlements

From the foothills to the coast, our city’s reach boasts one of the largest in South Australia.

Bringing together a diverse and vibrant mix of people and cultures, thriving and innovative businesses and millions of visitors every year, the City of Marion is like no other and continues to achieve beneficial council-wide environmental outcomes.

As one of the largest councils in South Australia we provide a positive customer service experience to the ongoing establishment of our residential and industrial areas. Our Environmental Sustainability Team is a major part of why the City of Marion is such a great place to live, work and play.

Each year our busy and dedicated team members coordinate environmental projects and programs and actively support the integration of environmental sustainability into our Council-wide planning. Our specialist staff also develop and coordinate a wide range of environmental education and engagement initiatives and provide quality support and advice on environmental sustainability matters.

There is now an opportunity for an experienced and qualified Environmental Planner to join a well-regarded team with a good culture and accelerate improvements to our environmental planning, engagement, and performance across the organisation and in the community.

As our new Senior Environmental Planner, in this position you will be responsible for facilitating the development, implementation and review of key environmental policies, services and directions across the organisation and ensuring integration through Council’s strategic management framework. This includes providing expert advice to senior and executive management and council members in responding to new external trends and directions along with developing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Unit Manager Environmental Sustainability, and as a senior member of the Environmental Sustainability team, your role will initially have a blend of environmental sustainability planning with active involvement in our Carbon Neutral Plan as we ambitiously head to net zero targets by 2030.

A day in life in this position will also include, but not be limited to the following.

  • Providing leadership and proactive advice across the organisation, to executive management and council members on the planning, delivery, reporting and evaluation of environmental initiatives.
  • Researching and identifying local and global environmental sustainability trends, indicators, and measures, and communicating priorities to support organisational decision making.
  • Developing high level policies and plans that ensure integration of environmental priorities in council’s strategic management framework.
  • Providing strategic internal advice and developing external written responses to local, state, and federal environmental policy.
  • Developing business cases for new initiatives, source funding and preparing grant applications.
  • Developing strategic regional partnerships with external stakeholders, including other councils, the LGA (Local Government Association), state government agencies, research institutions and the community on current environmental priorities.
  • Managing pilot projects and targeted initiatives that deepen organisational understanding of environmental sustainability priorities.
  • Supporting and mentoring other members of the Environmental Sustainability team.

To be considered for this position you must have a tertiary qualification to degree level in a discipline covering environmental policy and sciences combined with substantial environmental planning experience obtained in local government.

It is expected you will be a self-directed professional with strategic capabilities. In this position you will be required to apply your advanced knowledge of environmental policy, legislation, and sciences along with contemporary knowledge and understanding of carbon accounting, climate change adaptation planning and climate risk management.

It is assumed you will have exceptional written and oral communication skills including the ability to convey complex ideas with clarity and simplicity to executive leaders and elected decision makers by using political nous.

This is a great permanent position in one of South Australia’s largest and most progressive councils that is seriously focussed on environmental sustainability now and into the future.

Candidates that may have experience with other councils, or those from other industry sectors, can take advantage of a wide range of benefits not easily found with other employers.
