The Geological Survey of NSW (part of Mining, Exploration and Geoscience) are looking for their next Senior Geoscientist (Geospatial) to join the team.

As the Senior Geoscientist (Geospatial) you’ll provide project leadership and expert knowledge and advice in the governance, management and maintenance of new and legacy NSW geological mapping-related GIS data and information on behalf of GSNSW and MEG.

The role also administers and maintains the NSW Seamless (statewide) Geology and related stratigraphic databases based on an extensive understanding of NSW geology and GIS or geological mapping methodology and software applications.

Using your demonstrated experience in applied GIS software and techniques, as well as your experience in applied geological mapping techniques at the desktop and in the field, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Maintaining and updating the NSW seamless geology databases and related geological datasets, including the NSW stratigraphic databases
  • Annual delivery of seamless geology data updates
  • Staying abreast of the latest NSW geoscientific data and knowledge to inform data quality

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Advanced skills in ESRI ArcGIS software, including data capture, editing, merging and geoprocessing (relevant to geological mapping)
  • Highly developed skills in GIS techniques, spatial data analytics and data processing and formatting
  • The ability to work with alternative GIS and database software such as MapInfo and QGIS
  • Highly developed knowledge of NSW geology, particularly regarding geological mapping data
  • Well-developed understanding of geological field mapping and relevant data
  • Highly develop written and oral communications skills
  • The ability to adapt to changes in data requirements and software technology, supporting new customer needs or innovation

A degree in geoscience, with honours and/or postgraduate qualifications is also an essential requirement of the role.
