We are seeking a Senior Manager – Genetic Technologies in Canberra.
Responsibilities
- Liaise with growers, government and industry to understand the major constraints to Australian grains production and to identify opportunities for grain grower value creation that may be addressed through investment in genetic technology development.
- Development of R&D investment strategies that support Australian cereal breeding programs to drive improvement in the rate and quantum of genetic gain. Specifically, Genetic Technologies that improve genetic variation, population size, breeding accuracy and generation time within breeding programs and facilitate rapid delivery of improved varieties to Australian grain growers.
- In conjunction with the General Manager, Managers, Panels, Breeding Companies, Growers and Researchers, develop and implement strategies that deliver international best practice in genetic solutions for crop improvement, are grower profit-focussed and that are commercially relevant.
- Work with the General Manager to develop international and national crop genetic improvement partnerships and provide R&D oversight to ensure these partnerships deliver required outputs to breeding programs and benefits to Australian grain growers.
- Working with R&D collaborators, breeding programs and GRDC personnel to identify R&D capacity constraints. Develop and implement strategies to ensure appropriate R&D capacity is maintained.
- Provide sound advice to the General Manager in regard to grains related activities of the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).
Candidate Profile:
- Tertiary qualifications in Agricultural Science, Science, Genetics or equivalent.
- Proven experience managing multi-disciplinary teams.
- Proven experience in the development and implementation of strategy in complex and diverse fields to achieve grower outcomes.
- Proven experience in the administration and handling of contracts, terms for consultants and subcontractors for work projects.
- Highly developed presentation, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to influence, motivate and develop others.
- Demonstrated ability to write high level briefs, board papers or ministerial submissions.
- Demonstrated ability to synthesise information and provide summaries and recommended actions.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuously up-date skills and knowledge as required for this role.
- Demonstrated experience in the application of risk management principles.
- Strong analytical skills and the capacity to leverage off external expertise and think strategically, including the ability to provide sound project and issue advice.
- Exposure to commercial issues and demonstrated commercial acumen.

- Must be willing to undergo all Pre-employment Medical checks.
- Must have a valid Australian Driver’s Licence as deemed necessary.
