Job description

Job Reference: 1211705

School of Molecular and Life Sciences (MLS)

The Soil & Landscape Science Group and the Mechatronics and Biorobotics Research Laboratory in the Faculty of Science & Engineering at Curtin University are seeking a Senior Mechatronic Engineer to join the team.

The project and your new role

The project is funded by the Australian Government National Soil Carbon Innovation Challenge, which aims to lower the cost of soil carbon analysis so that farmers and land managers can afford to measure soil carbon and partake in the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) scheme to capture and store soil carbon, help offset our carbon emissions and at the same time improve soil and ecosystem heath.

You will work in a team with soil scientists, mechatronic and software engineers to design and develop an automated hardware-software system for cost-effectively measuring soil organic carbon stocks.

As the Senior Mechatronic Engineer, you will be responsible for working with a junior Mechatronic Engineer and the team to:

  • Contribute to the design of the mechatronic system.
  • Perform the 3D modelling of the hardware, simulation, and optimisation.
  • Design the workflow and automation.
  • Identify and test the sensors and actuators used in the system.
  • Develop the sensor calibration protocol and mechanisms.
  • Develop the control software.
  • Develop the automated system prototype and test it.
  • Optimise the prototype and test for deployment.
The position is based in Perth and will involve collaboration with the Curtin Soil & Landscape Science (curtin.edu/soil-landscape-sci) and Mechatronic Engineering groups. The successful candidate will make a substantial contribution to the Curtin University, will collaborate, and liaise with our industry partners.

You will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role. This position is based at our Curtin Bentley campus, candidates are expected to either be currently located in Perth, WA, or express a willingness to relocate. Visa sponsorship and relocation may be considered.

To learn more about these opportunities, please contact hiring manager Professor Raphael Viscarra Rossel, School of Molecular and Life Sciences (MLS) on mobile 0467 769 *** or email ***************@curtin.edu.au.
