Why Your Role Matters:The position is supported by the SmartSatCRC Project P2-60 Cyber Secure and Resilient Intelligent Space Systems. The Senior Research Fellow (Level C) is expected to make independent and original contributions to establish UNSW Canberra Space as a research leader within the emerging field of Cyber Resiliency for Space Systems. The candidate is expected to play a major role in the leadership and technical execution of the SmartSatCRC research program, applying their proven technical skills and abilities in a relevant discipline to develop and demonstrate novel artificial intelligence (AI) enabled approaches for Cyber Resiliency on small satellite architectures. The role is expected to provide substantial contributions to the UNSW Canberra Space strategic leadership team to establish a world-leading ‘cyber-for-space’ research and education capability at UNSW Canberra. The candidate shall liaise directly with academic, industry, and government stakeholders including UNSW Institute for Cyber Security (IFCYBER), the SmartSatCRC, and industry end users of the technology identified through the course of the project to deliver impactful, realisable, and industry relevant cyber resilient space architectures and solutions.
The role requires exceptional technical skills to devise and implement novel, AI-enabled, cyber resilience algorithms on the edge processing architectures contained within the UNSW Canberra Space small satellite constellation test range.
The role of Senior Research Fellow reports to the Director for UNSW Canberra Space and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities:Specific accountabilities for this role include:
Make independent contributions to research that have a significant impact in their field of expertise and create a nationally recognised research track record.
Undertake independent research in discipline or related area (as per the norms of the discipline), making an independent contribution through professional practice and expertise.
Develop research groups in area of specialist expertise and research methods that are appropriate to the discipline.
Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s (based on the norms of the discipline) at national level.
Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or Research Fellowships) and research end-users as a member or leader, at or above the level that is relevant to the discipline in leading universities.
Mentor and guide students, groups, and colleagues; supervise HDRs to timely completion as primary supervisor; and contribute to HDR review panels.
Lead the technical direction, execution, and reporting for the SmartSatCRC Project P2-60 Cyber Secure and Resilient Intelligent Space Systems in collaboration with the project Chief Investigators (CI)
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to establish UNSW Canberra Space research excellence in cyber resilience for Space Systems.
Who You Are:
A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
Proven advanced technical ability in one of the following areas: edge computing/embedded systems; artificial intelligence/machine learning; cyber resilience; novel satellite or ground system architecture/subsystem design; autonomous/intelligent systems.
Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
