Each year our busy and dedicated team of Planning and Development Specialists assess and approve approximately 2,000 development applications. These consist of a mixture of low to high density residential, commercial, industrial and community uses. The total value of applications that received approval in the 2022-23 financial year equated to approximately $190m. 

Due to a promotion, we are now looking to appoint an experienced Urban Planner who will be responsible for undertaking planning assessments in relation to all types and categories of development applications received by the City of Marion.

As our new Senior Urban Planner your experience will be fully utilised in this role. You can use your coaching skills along with your technical expertise to mentor other team members and provide guidance and direction that assists with the betterment of the operations of the department and Council as a whole.

Reporting to the Team Leader-Planning you will be challenged as you further grow your career and achieve a sense of fulfilment as you make a meaningful contribution to the community. 

  • Exercising development assessment decision making powers in accordance with the relevant Delegation of Authority policies whilst maintaining consistency with team and organisational approaches.
  • Assessing the Planning and Land Division Consent stage of more complex development applications, undertaking any necessary procedural requirements
  • Support the Team Leader Planning in the running of the team and assist with complex applications/projects.
  • Negotiating with applicants, architects, developers, and the public to achieve positive development outcomes
  • Instructing and briefing Council’s solicitors on development assessment and compliance matters, and represent Council at the Environment, Resources and Development Court regarding development assessment matters
  • Providing leadership and high-level advice to Council Members, the public and external organisations relating to general development, development potential and development assessment process matters
  • Preparing written reports to Council’s Assessment Panel (CAP) on the assessment of development applications, including recommendations or written reports to Council on liquor licence applications or other matters relevant to the department 
  • Attendance at CAP and Council meetings as required.

To be considered for this position you should have obtained a degree or certificate in Urban & Regional Planning (or equivalent). It is assumed that you possess a comprehensive understanding of the Planning, Development & Infrastructure Act 2016, Regulations and Planning & Design Code.

As a technically adept planning professional with excellent interpersonal skills, your prior experience could have been gained either in local government or with a consultancy.

Please Note: A Driver’s licence (car), an ability to climb ladders and work at heights (for site inspection), occasional out of hours attendance and regular attendance at Council Assessment Panel meetings (maximum 2 per month) is desired for this position.
