Your future role

Headquartered in Perth, WA, with manufacturing centers of excellence in Australia, Asia, North and South America, Austin has an exciting opportunity for an experienced National Safety, Health and Environment Leader.

The National Safety, Health and Environment Leader is responsible for governance and oversight of all Safety, Health and Environment matters across Austin’s Australian businesses and for ensuring (in conjunction with Operations and other stakeholders) that we provide a safe and healthy workplace, are good environmental stewards and that we meet all legislative, regulatory, corporate governance and Austin business requirements (both Australian and global).

The National Safety, Health and Environment Leader is also a member of the Global SHE Leaders network and is required to be an active participant, sharing their knowledge and expertise and contributing to the improvement of Safety, Health and Environment across the global company.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & LICENCES
SKILLS & EXPERTISE
  • Degree or Diploma in Workplace Health & Safety or equivalent experience is essential.
  • Certificated as a Return-to-Work or Injury Management Coordinator preferred.
  • Certificate IV in Training & Assessment desirable.
  • Relevant Environmental qualifications desirable but not essential.
  • Proven Health & Safety management experience essential.
  • Appropriate experience in environmental management.
  • Previous experience in heavy steel manufacturing industry favourable.
  • Leadership skills – team management, dynamics and change management.
  • Understanding, interpretation of and compliance with all statutory, legislative, regulatory and corporate governance requirements and experience in corporate level reporting.
  • Experience with Safety, Health and Environment systems
    • Development of or adoption and implementation of these systems
    • Incident management and corrective action capture
    • Critical control and other standards assessments
    • Reporting, analysis and action planning/execution
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and fluent English, including ability to effectively communicate and assist others by sharing knowledge and experience.
  • ICAM Lead investigator or equivalent experience is essential.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Experience using Microsoft software packages.

Key Responsibilities

  • Retain awareness of existing and emerging statutory, legislative, regulatory and corporate governance requirements; 
  • Understand, interpret and ensure compliance with all statutory, legislative, regulatory and corporate governance requirements and standards;
  • Effectively communicate changes in the above to all stakeholders across the business, and ensure that action plans are developed and implemented where necessary;
  • Develop and maintain an effective strategy and plan for Safety, Health and Environment across Australia;
  • Responsible for Australia level analysis and reporting to meet Business Unit, Corporate and other stakeholder needs;
  • Coaching, mentoring and development of relevant stakeholders including other Safety, Health and Environment personnel.
  • Develop, manage and maintain Austin’s Safety Management System (SMS) and procedures in line with ISO 14001:2015, & 45001:2018 requirements
  • Ensure all SMS procedures are adhered to and relevant documentation is completed by all departments in a timely manner;
  • Work closely with the Workshop Managers, other Operational Stakeholders and Safety, Health and Environment Advisors in the development and maintenance of Safety, Health and Environment Programs and ensure on-going compliance with all Safety, Health and Environment related legislation;
  • Be the primary source of expertise on matters relating to Safety, Health and Environment
  • Maintain records of all Safety, Health and Environment related incidents including: lost time injuries, all other injuries, first aid treatments and near misses;
  • Provide monthly statistics to management covering all Safety, Health and Environment related incidents;
  • Prepare summary reports as required for the Company and broken down by department on all Safety, Health and Environment related incidents;
  • Assist line management with audits of the safety systems to determine the degree of compliance with KPI’s and targets, and provide feedback to the executive management team;
  • Oversee and improve the safety induction programs for new starters and returning employees;
  • Ensure all new employee undergo a general and company specific induction and ensure that the induction is kept updated to reflect any changes or improvements in company policies and procedures;
  • Identify annual training requirements for staff by keeping abreast of training courses available;
  • Conduct courageous conversations with management and employees in relation to unsafe conditions and unsafe behaviours
  • As Chief Warden for the Perth based business, ensure that appropriate Emergency Management Plans are in place, maintained and well communicated. Take the lead role in managing any emergency situations
