The opportunity
We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated, and technically minded professional to join our State Agreements and Approvals team as Specialist, Approvals Delivery. Within this role, you will use your technical approvals knowledge and interpersonal skills to work with a team of experienced professionals in assisting with determining the Government approvals strategy for Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore operations.
The role will be part of the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Approvals team, which delivers approvals for Rio Tinto’s mines, rail, port, infrastructure and renewables projects.

This position is accountable for coordinating the effective delivery of environmental and other Government approvals for Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore operations. Based within Perth, and reporting to the Superintendent, Approvals Delivery, the role broadly entails:
  • Coordinating with internal experts within the State Agreements and Approvals team to develop strategies that effectively deliver approvals across an extensive portfolio of mines, rail, port, infrastructure and renewables.
  • Ensuring there is sufficient understanding amongst all project representatives of external approval requirements, and ensuring there is alignment of approval priorities across internal Business Units within a particular hub.
  • Providing advice to the business on approvals schedules and articulating the impacts risks may have on the timing of Approvals Delivery, so that opportunities for strategic approvals can be identified.
  • Enhancing and improving systems and processes to effectively report on approvals updates.
  • Reviewing policy and reform initiatives to provide advice and inform submissions.
What you’ll bring
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate the following:
  • A strong understanding of the Government approvals framework relevant to the resource sector
  • Demonstrated ability to produce reports and documentation of a high standard.
  • Experience in working within approvals systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver system improvements and lead change management processes
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Strong project management and written communication skills
  • Sound negotiation and influencing skills
