Appointment Pool

West Coast Language Development Centre (LDC) is seeking to establish a pool of Speech Pathologists for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year.

Suitable applicants will ideally possess extensive knowledge in planning for the Speech and Language needs of students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Speech and Language Officers will need to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team as well as possess the ability to work independently, in order to support class and whole of school language initiatives. Suitable applicants will need to develop and support the implementation of specialised language programs for students with identified Speech and Language difficulties/impairments.

In addition to the specialised language programs, suitable applicants will ideally display their ability to build the capacity of classroom teachers and Level 1 Speech and Language Officers (Speech Pathologists). They will be responsible for mentoring Speech Pathology students as well as supporting the strategic direction of the school through remaining abreast of current research and proactively distributing information through parent programs and professional learning opportunities for teachers.

West Coast LDC is a specialised school that supports students with DLD. The school has an intensive, early intervention student program for children from Kindy to Year 2 and an outreach program that works across mainstream schools. Staff are dedicated, highly collaborative and innovative, in order to support educational outcomes for all students.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Experience in developing Speech and Language/literacy policy and programs and knowledge of latest trends and research in Speech and Language development.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and review Speech and Language/literacy programs.
  • Ability to provide specialised Speech and Language services and support to students with Speech and Language impairments.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including the demonstrated ability to prepare reports and prepare and deliver professional development programs.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate language impaired students’ progress both individually and in the context of language/literacy programs.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills that demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an interdisciplinary team in an educational and/or community setting.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • possess a Tertiary qualification of Bachelor of Speech Pathology or equivalent, and eligibility for membership of the Speech Pathology Association of Australia
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
