Specialist Structural Geology – Perth based

About the role

An excellent opportunity now exists for a suitably qualified and experienced Specialist Structural Geologistto join our Mine Technical Services (MTS) team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore. In this role, you will provide structural geological support to our wide range of stakeholders from Geotechnical Engineers, Resource Evaluation geologists to Geological Modelling geologists. As part of this role, you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of mine sitesand be arepresentative from a close-knit team working together to define and characterise geological and geotechnical risks and opportunities. 

Reporting to the Superintendent Structural Geology, you will:

  • Conduct in-person field mapping or UAV-assisted mapping to collect structural data to reconcile geological models.
  • Identify, record and rectify model non-conformance based on new data.
  • Risk-assess the impact of changes to geological models on geotechnical designs.
  • Design drill plans to target structural uncertainty.
  • Support ore-body knowledge data collection for both early study-phases and implementation pit designs.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the Rio Tinto values of courage, care, and curiosity.
  • Take part in early-stage studies to assess structural geological confidence and data maturity.

What you’ll bring

  • Excellent communication skills, independent problem solving and ability to work within a dynamic team environment
  • Good time management skills to work with competing priorities
  • Be highly attuned to issues of structural geological data capture, quality control and information workflow
  • Previous experience in field mapping procedures
  • Previous experience in geological modelling and GIS software (Vulcan, Leapfrog, ArcGIS)
  • A manual ‘C’ class WA driver’s licence
