Student Placement Opportunities

A student could assist with the following functions within each stream:  

National Case Management Centre (NCMC)

Intake calls after two weeks of training;

• Fact checking and expanding upon existing NCMC knowledge articles, fact sheets, and resource documents;
• Provide client treatment and case management support over the phone;
• Digital response support.

Identity Security Operations Centre (ISOC)

• Monitoring dark and clear net environments using industry standard platforms and tools available on the market.
• Cybercriminal profiling through collation of known attributes reported to IDCARE via the National Case Management Centre.
• Data analysis, report writing and creation of products relevant to IDCARE’s subscriber offerings (bespoke reports, analytical/statistical reports and other products as needed).
• Scripting/coding solutions for various business needs in Python, SQL, HTML/CSS/Java as they relate to data cleaning, subsetting and other investigations.

Business Operations and Capability Development (BOCD) - Capability Development

• Develop a script that can be used to compare a potentially malicious file against ones found during discovery in CFA.
• Determine how to turn a computer into an air gaped download machine for darknet purposes.
• Develop documentation for the installation and general use of FortiClientEMS and ManageEngine Endpoint Central.
• Assist digital creations to create educational material for the public. Some examples could be:
  - Explaining the psychology behind scams;
  - How cyber criminals manipulate client’s behaviour;
  - Explaining to the public how some scams may seem intentional but are in fact coincidence (e.g., a client receives a fraudulent Australia Post text when they are in fact expecting a package. This does not mean that Australia Post is complicit or compromised, it is most likely the scammers send out a big net and there will be a certain percentage of people waiting for a package when they receive the scam text);
  - Teaching tactics to overcome and beat the psychology and mental games used by threat actors (e.g., Stop, Think, Connect).

Business Operations and Capability Development (BOCD) - Business Operations

• General filing and admin duties:
  - Review, processing and filing of IDCARE contracts;
  - Updating the Client Relationship Management system with contract details and deliverables;
• Accounts invoicing;
• Travel bookings;
• Assisting with staff onboarding.

Other functions may include:

• Responding to small business compromise cases – speaking to the business owner about the compromise and developing a response plan;
• Responding to individual complex cases if they arise, speaking to the individual and developing a response plan;
• Assist with the monthly insights report working on the chosen theme for the month - contribute research and develop analysis from the data, as well as client stories.

Student requirements:

We are looking for Undergraduate or Postgraduate students that have completed at least one year of coursework ideally in Law, Psychology, Cyberpsychology, Arts or Social Work (full-time or part-time) with good results.  Students must have:

• Excellent verbal and written communication and be able to confidentially steer and navigate individuals in crisis;
• Be able to think on their feet and juggle competing priorities;
• Have strong ethics and work with integrity;
• Be able to listen and act on feedback professionally.

Depending on the institution responsible for the student, they may be required to complete additional tasks in relation to the placement opportunity. This may include an end of placement presentation of their experiences and a diary of learnings to be completed at the end of each working day.   The placement period is dependent on the requirements of the institution but is typically one to five days a week (8 hours a day) over a semester, depending on their availability.  

Where performance is maintained and funding is available, the student may be offered a traineeship program with the opportunity to progress into an ongoing full-time or part-time role. This may be subject to a separate recruitment process.  

IDCARE will:

• Provide the student with an induction about relevant workplace policies, including workplace health and safety and confidentiality, to orientate the student into their workplace.
• Provide each student with an appropriate work integrated learning experience including providing appropriately qualified staff who will instruct, direct and assist the student, be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the student and evaluate the student’s performance during the placement.
• Complete an evaluation of the student’s performance during the placement and provide the University with a copy of that evaluation.
• Communicate with the course/placement coordinator if any major problems arise and the placement needs to be terminated.
