About the business and the role
Mackay Area Productivity Services (MAPS) is the primary on-farm provider of quality agronomic advice and extension for all sugar cane growers in Mackay Sugar. MAPS is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee which is funded jointly by sugar cane growers and Mackay Sugar. We work on most issues including: pests, diseases, clean seed propagation, variety management, nutrition, weeds, irrigation, harvesting and fallow management. Our mission is to enhance the profitability and sustainability of the Mackay Sugar industry through innovative productivity programs and plant protection services. MAPS employs 8 Productivity Officers, each responsible for servicing their own group of growers within a geographic area.
Job tasks and responsibilities
- One-on-one advice and extension with farmers
- Assist with propagation of approved SRA cane varieties
- Inspect growers plant sources
- Machinery inspections (biosecurity)
- Surveys (pest, disease, farming practice)
- Data collection/entry for spatial record keeping program - Agtrix Farming
- Assisting grower engagement in Smartcane BMP program
- Organising and running of farm walks, shed meetings and field days
- Assist in on-farm trials and water quality projects
Skills and experience
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as Agriculture or Applied Science
- Good level of communication skills
- Good understanding of agronomy
- Preferably some field experience interacting with primary producers
- Computer skills – Microsoft Office as minimum
- Valid manual drivers licence
- Reasonable level of fitness
- New graduates and those with limited work experience are encouraged to apply
