The Sustainable Agriculture and Carbon Outreach Officer is a key position in the board's growing sustainable agricultural team, working across the Carbon Outreach and sustainable agricultural facilitator projects. The successful applicant will facilitate and implement workshops, training events, grant programs and activities that increase awareness of carbon reduction practices and exploring markets that align with both the board's, the South Australian and the Australian Government's objectives for Sustainable Agriculture and natural resource management. They will engage and work closely with pastoralists, land managers, producer groups, First Nations groups, farming systems groups, agri-business, industry bodies and agencies to achieve this.
A key element of this role is delivering training and advice to empower pastoralists, land managers and First Nations people to understand and ultimately participate in carbon markets and integrate low emission technologies and practices into their pastoral and farming operations and land management practices.
This will require delivering a carbon farming training package that provides clear, consistent and culturally appropriate information on carbon farming and low-emissions technologies and practices that are relevant to the South Australian Arid Lands region.
Key Outcomes:
- Increased knowledge and potential uptake of greenhouse gas emissions management, carbon farming, and low-emissions technologies and practices among land managers;
- Individuals and the community have increased capacity to engage and develop literacy around carbon farming/management opportunities,
- Review, update and adapt a carbon farming/management training package to ensure it provides clear, consistent and culturally appropriate information on carbon farming and low-emissions technologies and practices relevant to the South Australian Arid Lands region;
- Delivery of the carbon farming training package to South Australian Arid Lands land managers and First Nations people through a series of community workshops;
- Delivery of one-on-one extension to training participants to facilitate the uptake and application of greenhouse gas emissions management, carbon farming, and low-emissions technologies and practices.
- Identification, development, management and delivery of projects and programs that increase community and stakeholder awareness and adoption of best practice in agriculture, grazing and natural resources management
- Identify and address priority Sustainable Agriculture and grazing issues and opportunities through the implementation of management strategies based on, collaborative relationships with land managers, producer groups and local, state and Commonwealth government agencies.
- Promote widely Climate Smart Agriculture and the principles of long term landscape management for productivity and conservation
