Derby District High School (DHS) is seeking a community-minded Early Years Teacher to join their enthusiastic team of teaching staff.

Teachers and school administrators employed at Derby District High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

About the role

The school is currently part of the Kimberley School’s Project and supports staff to implement a targeted teaching approach to teaching and learning programs. This includes Daily Reviews and in the Early Years and Let’s Decode. The successful applicant will ideally be:

  • a dedicated and motivated educator who can work collaboratively to provide high quality teaching and learning programs to support the diverse and varied needs of our students.
  • well versed in the Western Australian curriculum for Primary School students
  • willing to apply the strategies of differentiated instruction, explicit instruction, and other evidence-based instruction models.
  • able to develop and deliver structured engaging lessons to students of varying ability levels and be committed to creating and fostering student engagement through the development of a supportive environment.
  • be able to use their interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with students and their families fostering an engaging environment where success is celebrated.

Our school

Derby DHS is located in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings and is currently undergoing a substantial building program. With an enrolment of over 600 students, it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park.

Derby DHS is a dynamic school with a highly motivated, supportive and collaborative staff of over 100 people. The collaborative approach, exciting work environment and the students make it a great place to teach. Staff are passionate about improving standards in Education, particularly in Aboriginal Education.  There is an active and strong social club to ensure that staff are well supported both in and out of school.

The staff is young and vibrant, bringing energy and enthusiasm to classrooms and community responsiveness. This fact ensures too that the interests of the students can be addressed in the teaching and learning programs.

The Location and Community

Derby is 220 km east of Broome by road and is 2463 km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. The town is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
