Technical Director - Geotechnical Engineering

Job Summary:

As the Technical Director for Geotechnical Engineering, you will lead the Geotechnical Engineering division of Geoporte in Victoria, overseeing the technical aspects of geotechnical projects, ensuring the highest standards of engineering excellence, and driving innovation within the team. You will provide strategic direction, manage complex projects, and mentor junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

1.            Technical Oversight:

•             Provide technical guidance and oversight on all Geotechnical Engineering projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.

•             Review and approve project designs, reports, and proposals.

•             Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for complex geotechnical challenges.

2.            Project Management:

•             Oversee the planning, execution, and completion of Geotechnical Engineering projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the client's satisfaction.

•             Coordinate with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure effective communication and collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.

•             Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions as needed.

3.            Business Development:

•             Identify and pursue new business opportunities in the Geotechnical Engineering sector.

•             Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, industry partners, and regulatory agencies.

•             Prepare and deliver technical presentations and proposals to prospective clients.

4.            Mentoring and Development:

•             Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff, providing guidance on career development and technical skills.

•             Promote knowledge sharing and professional development within the team.

5.            Quality Assurance:

•             Establish and enforce quality assurance and quality control procedures for Geotechnical Engineering projects.

•             Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company policies, safety standards, and environmental regulations.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field; a Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification.
  • A minimum of 20 years of experience in Geotechnical Engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale and complex geotechnical projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of Geotechnical Engineering principles, practices, and software tools.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong business acumen and experience in business development.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist geotechnical software such as PLAXIS 2D and 3D, WALLAP, GeoStudio and Rocscience, and experience at applying and analysing the outputs from other commercial geotechnical software platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of soil and rock mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering design of earthworks, ground improvement, shallow and deep foundations, slope stabilisation, ground retention and tunnel design.
  • The successful candidate should have experience in leading geotechnical design teams on challenging major geotechnical and tunnelling projects. 
  • Extensive knowledge of ground characterization and various geotechnical aspects in a variety of ground conditions. Knowledge of advanced ground constitutive models is essential.
  • In-depth experience and knowledge of geotechnical risk management is essential.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant engineering standards as well as local road and rail authority standards and specifications.
  • Strong experience in construction activities and providing specialist geotechnical advice to principal contractors on site for a wide variety of projects.
  • Valid Australian driving licence.
