The Role
Location: Carrapateena, South Australia (60-minute flight from Adelaide / 30-minute flight from Port Augusta)
Roster: Site based 8 days on; 6 days off
Reporting to: Senior Geologist - Mining
Employment Type: Permanent
The key responsibilities of this role include:
As 'Technician - Geology' you will be working within a team of Geologists and Technicians in the field. These duties include some of the following:

  • Coordinate the Geology team operating in the core shed for daily and roster swing task requirements.
  • Geological core processing operations including:
- Core orientation, metre marking, photographyCore SC measurements and cutting
- Creating drill core laboratory dispatches
- Collection of radiation, magnetic susceptibility and hardness (leeb) data
- Geotechnical data capture - RQD, Fracture Frequency
  • Archive and catalogue drilled diamond core and laboratory returned samples in a core laydown.
  • Geology stock takes including core yard supplies and stores ordering.
  • Daily, weekly, monthly pre-start and maintenance inspections.
  • Liaise with departments in the wider BHP site team and contractor/supply stakeholders to schedule in or complete works associated with the core shed.
  • Field based program establishment, execution and ongoing support including environmental and cultural clearances, road and site access requirements and maintenance, site preparation and consumable and equipment maintenance.
  • Safety observations, hazard identification, assessments.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and ongoing improvements of Mine Geology systems in line with BHP strategies, policies and processes.
Applicant Requirements
  • Significant Core processing experience.
  • Well demonstrated field based Geological program experience.
  • Competent with manual vehicle driving on a mine site or similar.
  • High Risk Forklift Licence.
  • Able to make confident and timely decisions when working under high-pressure situations.
  • Positive and confident communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a team and often without supervision.
  • High regard for safety, improvements and hazard identification in the work area.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver and drive safe practices.
  • Computer skills, including exposure to Microsoft office.
