About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic and experienced Technician to join the Infectious Diseases Department in a permanent full time position (fixed shifts). The roster covers shifts between the hours of 7am to midnight with the requirement to be able to work day and evening on rotation.

Duties:

  • Setup specimens for bacteria/virus/fungi in accordance with documented procedures;
  • Perform tasks including culture plate inoculation, microscopy preparation/examination (eg gram stains & wet preparations for cell counts, crystals, faecal parasites, trichomonas & fungi), simple rapid tests (eg antigen tests, MRSA culture reading, scope culture reading), specimen referral, LIS coding & registration of samples;
  • Participate in quality assurance programs (internal & external);
  • Perform departmental QC as per established procedures and notify more senior laboratory staff of any problems;
  • Routine operation, maintenance and trouble-shooting for equipment within the department and notify more senior laboratory staff of any problems;
  • Training of new or less experienced staff as directed by Department Supervisor;
  • Monitor department stocks of consumables and notify more senior laboratory staff of any problems;
  • Perform all tasks as per established shift responsibility procedures; and
  • Associated duties supporting the main functions of the department when required.

Applicants should possess the following:

  • Practical and relevant experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory;
  • Sound knowledge and experience in the use of laboratory equipment, automated analysers and quality control material;
  • Sound knowledge and experience in the preparation of microbiological specimens for culture for bacteria and fungi and microscopic examination including Gram stain preparation, wet preparation;
  • Attention to detail and excellent time management skills;
  • A sound working knowledge and experience in working in a quality controlled environment and an understanding of NATA accreditation requirements,
  • Ability to adapt to change and to be able to work with a dynamic team; 
  • A positive ‘can do’ attitude and a desire to exceed customer service expectations; and
  • Evidence of 2 doses including booster of an approved COVID-19 vaccination.
