Job description

The Opportunity

  • Build epitaxial thin films for advanced electronic devices with your expertise
  • Collaborate with a range of research experts and industry partners
  • Join the dynamic team at CSIRO – Australia’s National Science Agency!

We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Thin Film Scientist to join our talented ‘Unconventional Thin Films’ Team in Lindfield NSW!

CSIRO Manufacturing Business Unit brings together multi-disciplinary scientific & engineering capabilities and world-class infrastructure to efficiently partner with industry in developing innovative products and processes that allow Australian manufacturers to be globally competitive and environmentally sustainable.

As the Thin Film Scientist, you will be part of our ‘Unconventional Thin Films’ Team within the wider ‘Devices and Engineered Systems’ Research Program. At CSIRO, we combine the precision of surface engineering technologies with our coating expertise to develop techniques for depositing thin films of multifunctional nanostructured materials. Therefore, in this hands-on lab-based role, you will bring your well-developed experimental skills and research experience in analysing thin film properties using a broad range of techniques, to develop epitaxial thin films for advanced electronic devices and other applications. You will also play a key role in effectively collaborating with other researchers and internal teams, as well as industry partners, to contribute to the development and growth of CSIRO’s thin film deposition capabilities.

If you’re experienced in thin film production, and looking to work on the next big-thing in advanced materials & devices manufacturing, we would love to hear from you! CSIRO offers you excellent professional development and we are strongly committed to supporting your career growth.

Your duties will include:

  • Determining optimal deposition system parameters to produce epitaxial thin films to meet specification for industrial applications, troubleshooting deposition systems and equipment, and characterisations of the thin films.
  • Assisting in scoping and procuring new equipment to meet project requirements with strong attention to detail when outlining equipment specifications and liaising with equipment suppliers.
  • Undertaking activities in a demanding research environment involving multi-tasking, forward thinking, strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Producing comprehensive and easily understood safe work instructions for various equipment.
  • Preparing risk assessments and other operational documentation as required.
  • Initiating and maintaining collaborative relationships with external researchers and industry associates.
  • Making significant contributions to communicating research or technological results in internal & external forums and, where applicable, contributing to and/or generating scientific papers and reports.

Location: Lindfield, NSW
Salary: AU$105K – AU$114K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified Term of 3 years
Reference: 92331

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience, in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with thin film synthesis based on physical vapor deposition processes, such as pulsed laser deposition, magnetron sputtering, or molecular beam epitaxy.
  • Experience in thin film characterisation techniques such as XRD, AFM, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, electrical and optical techniques.
  • Good understanding of solid-state chemistry, crystallography, materials design principles, and structure-property relations in inorganic materials.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining advanced high vacuum deposition equipment.
  • Demonstrated impact from R&D – for example, development of commercial IP, commercial product, research papers or process development.
  • Demonstrate high levels of initiative, ingenuity, and skill to carry out experimental work and solve problems.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
