Job description

City of Newcastle (CN) is excited to share this incredible opportunity for an Undergraduate Planner to join the Planning, Transport & Regulation team.

In this role you will get to work alongside a team of professionals, gaining practical industry relevant experience while you complete your Town Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, or equivalent studies at your chosen NSW University.

As an undergraduate, you will be contracted to CN until the completion of your undergraduate studies (up to four years), and will be paid for full-time hours, which includes paid leave of up to 7 hours per week (during the academic period) to complete your studies. Additionally, CN will pay for mandatory study costs such as course fees, student administration fees and textbooks (to a capped amount) throughout your course of study.  

The Undergraduate Planner will assist with the preparation of strategic plans, assessment and determination of development applications, carry out site inspections, suggest recommendations relating to development matters, and provide professional and technical planning advice to the community including internal and external customers.

To be successful in this job, you will need to have the following:

Essential Criteria

  • Currently studying at a NSW university as a minimum second-year student in Town Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, or equivalent studies
  • Ability to successfully continue part time studies (minimum Pass results in all courses), undertaking a minimum of 2 courses per semester.
  • Demonstrated high level of written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Demonstrated customer service and teamwork skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across council and with external service providers as required.
