Job description

The WA Police Union (WAPU) is seeking a Union Secretary with governance, Risk and Compliance Skills to play a pivotal role in ensuring WAPU operates efficiently, effectively and delivers quality service to its members. Reporting to both the Board and the CEO, this position is responsible for overseeing compliance, regulatory functions and adherence to legal standards while managing operational risk.

About Us

The WA Police Union (WAPU) represents the professional and industrial interests of nearly 7,000 police officers, police recruits, cadets and police auxiliary officers employed by the WA Police Force. Covering the portfolios of; Legal, Industrial Relations, WHS, Welfare, Media, Internal Advocacy, Research, Administration and Member Services, WAPU plays a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction and ensuring the well-being of its constituents. WAPU is registered with the WA Industrial Relations Commission (WAIRC) and affiliated with the Police Federation of Australia (PFA). 

About the Role

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Board in ensuring WAPU's efficient operation and timely service delivery to members.
  • Report and escalate Risk and Compliance matters to the Board and/or CEO as required.
  • Develop, maintain and implement frameworks, policies and procedures to support WAPU's operational Risk and Compliance management.
  • Manage day-to-day Risk and Compliance activities, ensuring efficient and effective implementation of processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address compliance issues and drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance and reporting to the IRC and FWC is completed.

About You

Essential:

  • Possess a bachelor's or master’s degree in business administration, risk management or related field OR have demonstrated relevant experience.                                                             
  • Experience working across several business functions demonstrating business management, governance and Risk and Compliance.
  • Demonstrated collaborative and respectful approach to Risk and Compliance, as well as the ability to train and mentor others.
  • Sound understanding of employee/industrial relations legislation and practices in Australia. 
  • Interface with Boards within either not for profit organisations or private companies. 
  • Previous management experience.                                                                                             

Desirable:

  • An understanding of Policing policies, rules and regulations.
