The Work Health and Safety Officer will work directly to the Director, Safety and Wellbeing and be responsible for leading a compliance review of the department’s Work Health and Safety management system and addressing any identified gaps within the system. This role will work independently from the Safety and Wellbeing team to deliver on agreed key activities within the Work Health safety management system review.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Undertaking a compliance review of the department’s Work Health and Safety management system, documenting any gaps in the system, and making recommendations on how to address those gaps in order of priority/risk.
- Reviewing WHS policies and procedures for currency.
- Updating and creating WHS policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation and Australian Standards and suitability.
- Leading consultation and implementation of any updates to the Work Health and Safety management system.
- Consolidating and archiving defunct policies and procedures located in SharePoint and Objective, ensuring easy accessibility for employees and removing any duplication.
- Work collaboratively with the Director Safety and Wellbeing and provide regular updates on the status of work and identify any barriers or delays to delivering work within agreed timeframes.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Certificate IV or Diploma of Work Health and Safety.
- Excellent written communication skills demonstrated through the creation of WHS policy and procedural documents.
- Strong oral communication skills including liaison, negotiation and representational skills, particularly in dealing with workplace safety issues.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing and maintaining a Work Health and Safety management system.
- Experience using SharePoint and Objective and ability to create and update file structures to improve accessibility and reduce information duplication.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise work based on risk and to deliver key milestones within agreed timeframes.
- Extensive knowledge of WHS legislation, codes of practice and relevant Australian Standards.
