SHFPACT is a non-profit health promotion charity working to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people, people with disabilities and the general community through the provision of clinical services, health promotion activities, outreach services and workshops. SHFPACT also provides training opportunities for various groups of professionals in the community.
About the Project
SHFPACT has received funding from the Healthy Canberra Grants Program (ACT Health) to enhance young people’s engagement to inform and shape sexual health information and health promotion activities.
About the Role
We’re looking to employ multiple Youth Peer Educators to work within the SHFPACT Community Education and Health Promotion team. You’ll spend your work time:
- Consulting with other young people about their sexual health needs and priorities
- Providing health education workshops to young people relating to sexuality and sexual health (for example: healthy relationships, consent, safe sex, STIs and BBVs, contraception, porn, sexting, and diversity in sex, gender and sexuality)
- Creating social media content relevant for your community
- Developing youth-focussed health information materials including workshop session plans and handouts, presentation materials and reviewing existing resources
- Participating in project team meetings and professional development training
- Supporting other SHFPACT activities and events such as National Condom Day
We prefer a 12-month commitment for Youth Peer Educators.
The Ideal Youth Peer Educator
While no experience in sexual health is needed, an inclusive mindset and sex-positive attitude is a must. You’ll also describe yourself as someone with:
- An interest in improving sexual and reproductive health and promoting positive approaches to sexuality and relationships in your community
- Good communication skills
- The ability to work in a team and participate in group discussions
- The ability to work independently
- A desire to develop your knowledge and skills through professional development training and research
Youth Peer Educators are required to have, or be able to get, an ACT Working With Vulnerable People registration (essential) and NDIS Worker Check (mandatory for working with people with disabilities). Successful candidates for this role must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. A current Driver’s Licence and access to vehicle for work purposes is desirable but not essential.
Diversity and Inclusion
We strongly encourage people from across our diverse communities to apply! At SHFPACT we are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where we value each person’s uniqueness. We embrace diverse life experiences and the perspectives of our people, while providing high-quality health education to all members of our community, regardless of age, sex, gender, ethnicity, religion, cultural background, ability, or sexual orientation.
The Project has a particular focus on ensuring sexual health information is relevant and accessible for our multicultural and multilingual community. Some projects will have a specific focus on improving understanding of hepatitis and other blood-borne viruses for people who have migrated from countries of high prevalence.
