Clinical Microbiology Registrar

  • 12 Month Full Time Fixed Term Maternity Leave Cover

Your Opportunity:
The Microbiology Registrar role entails internal and external clinical liaison, acquisition of practical skills relevant to the laboratory, involvement with teaching, research, and quality assurance activities.
Laboratory consultation: general laboratory aspects of diagnostic issues such as clinical input, priority setting, workflow, selection of most appropriate test, rejection of inappropriate specimens and inappropriate test requests, testing methodologies and troubleshooting (pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical), validation and verification requirements in medical microbiology, quality management of laboratory, laboratory safety across the Pathology service.
The Role:
Laboratory skill sets: Trainees are expected to acquire competency in performing microscopy, culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and other relevant microbiological methodologies.
Clinical liaison: provide consultation service to clinicians, nurses and other staff in Melbourne Health in relation to Clinical Microbiology diagnostics (including selection of most appropriate test, optimal specimen, appropriate testing methodology, result interpretation, add-on tests and referrals), relay of urgent and/or important results (e.g. CSF results, blood culture results, multi-resistant organisms results as required) to clinical teams, and provision of microbiology opinions for infection prevention issues (such as needlestick injuries, risk assessments in airborne pathogen exposures and risk assessments in sterilisation breaches).
Research: Laboratory based research is encouraged and supervised, a research project is expected for Part II candidates.

  • Registration with (or eligible for registration) with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Appropriate health professional tertiary qualification/s
