Job description

Maternal Fetal Medicine Senior Registrar, Obstetrics & Gynaecology

RANZCOG Accredited Senior Registrar or Non-Accredited Senior Registrar

We are seeking an enthusiastic Obstetric and Gynaecology (O&G) Senior Registrar to join the Western Health O&G team commencing 5th August 2024. In line with our shared vision to provide both excellence in clinical care and vocational training, the unit has strived to provide an environment for registrars and junior staff that is second to none in Australia.

Western Health provides women’s health services across our network including the tertiary level service at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s (JKWC) at Sunshine Hospital and a lower acuity service at Bacchus Marsh Hospital.

JKWC is a purpose-built women’s and children’s facility that opened with state-of-the-art facilities in 2019. The service cares for over 6500 mothers annually and we have a comprehensive tertiary team comprising Maternal Fetal Medicine, obstetric medicine, obstetric anaesthesia and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Gynaecology services include general gynaecology as well as gynae-oncology, pelvic floor and minimally invasive surgery.

Bacchus Marsh Hospital joined the Western Health network in 2021. The lower risk maternity service is expected to grow to approximately 1000 births annually, whilst the gynaecology service is expanding to support a large number of theatre sessions and extensive ambulatory services. The site is well set-up to provide excellent gynaecology skills development for Senior Registrars.

Our Senior Registrars enjoy a broad range of experiences, with exposure to a mix of obstetrics and gynaecology training. The absence of subspecialty gynaecology fellows at our hospital ensures that our Senior Registrars benefit from maximum exposure to subspecialty clinics and primary operator experience. Our team-based structure supports our Senior Registrars to take on leadership roles within their teams and within the unit.

Senior registrar positions (RANZCOG accredited) for 2024 are structured to provide opportunities to maintain and develop skills relevant to the intended future scope of specialist practice post-FRANZCOG. Training objectives include:

  • Develop and demonstrate skills relevant to audit, clinical research trials, leadership and administration relevant to a busy Level 6 maternity service
  • Maintain and develop complex obstetric management skills, including birthing unit management, complex operative obstetrics and supervision/teaching of junior trainees and HMOs.
  • Achieve skills in management of the patient journey including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative management and primary operator experience, and post-operative care and follow up in gynaecology
  • Advanced trainees in their final year of training are encouraged to engage in Transition to Fellowship opportunities

This position has a combination of:

  • Service commitment to the birthing services including antenatal clinic, acute birthing and inpatient obstetric care (including rostered after-hours)
  • Rotation through the Maternal Fetal Medicine unit
  • Gynaecological surgery
  • Participation in quality assurance, audit and teaching programs
  • Participation in education, mentorship and teaching of junior staff

About You

  • Current medical registration with no current AHPRA conditions on practice
  • Completion of at least four years of RANZCOG-accredited training or equivalent (essential)
  • Completion of RANZCOG fellowship examinations – written and oral (desirable)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to professional development
  • Commitment to education and support of junior medical staff in O&G

Application requirements:

  • Please attach your CV, Cover Letter and Application Form to your application
  • Please indicate if you are applying for an accredited or non-accredited position
  • Please ensure that the Referee Assessment form is downloaded and forwarded to three (3) Referees for completion. Please send referee reports to Jacinta Stewart (***************@wh.org.au)
  • It is preferable that at least one (1) referee must be from an Australian training hospital and the referee has been involved as a direct supervisor/line manager within the last 24 months

Shortlisted applicants will be notified shortly following the closing date and Interviews are scheduled to take place on Thursday 6th June 2024.

All Senior Registrars participate in night shift rotations, labour ward shifts and some weekends. All Senior Registrars participate in quality activities including case reviews for M&M, audit and attendance at S&Q meetings. All Senior Registrars are expected to participate in teaching and mentorship of junior trainees and resident medical officers.
