We are offering enthusiastic Senior Hospital Medical Officer’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) experience by joining Western Health Women’s Health team, commencing 5 August 2024.
Western Health provides women’s health services across our network including Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s (JKWC), co-located at Sunshine Hospital, and Bacchus Marsh Hospital, located approximately 40km west of JKWC.
JKWC, a purpose-built women’s and children’s hospital, opened in 2019 and provides Obstetric and Gynaecology services to a large area of Melbourne’s western suburbs. The Obstetric tertiary service provides care to over 6500 pregnant women annually, supported by Maternal Fetal Medicine, Obstetric Medicine, Obstetric Anaesthesia and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit accepting babies born from 26 weeks gestation. Gynaecology services include general ambulatory and inpatient gynaecology, along with subspecialty units comprising gynae-oncology, urogynaecology and minor & complex minimally invasive surgery.
Bacchus Marsh Hospital, a lower risk and acuity service, joined the Western Health network in 2021. The obstetric service is expected to grow to approximately 1000 births annually whilst the gynaecology service is expanding to support a large number of theatre sessions and extensive ambulatory services.
About the Role
The positions are most suited to applicants who plan a career in O&G, either intending to apply to the RANZCOG Integrated Training Program or fulfilling a career in rural procedural General Practice.
This role provides opportunities to gain skills in all areas of O&G and comprises rotations in the following areas at JKWC and Bacchus Marsh hospitals:
- Supervised Elective Caesarean Section (ECS) training – rotation to ECS to develop skills in, and performing, caesarean sections, supervised by an O&G consultant.
- Birthing Suite – the SHMO will share responsibility for the acute obstetric service (Birth Suite and Maternity Assessment Centre), gaining skills in primary assessment of the pregnant woman, labour management, operative vaginal delivery and emergency obstetric procedures.
- Outpatient gyanecological care, including general gynaecology outpatient clinic with supervised training in minor gynaecological surgical, eg. insertion of intrauterine devices and our Early Pregnancy Assessment Services (EPAS) – managing common issues in the first trimester of pregnancy eg. vaginal bleeding, miscarriage.
- Antenatal Clinic including rotations through the Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) unit.
- Emergency department O&G (EDOG) - receiving referrals from the Sunshine Hospital Emergency department and reviewing, assessing and formulating plans for acute gynaecological presentations in a supported environment.
- Rostered night duty, including inpatient obstetric, gynaecology and peri-operative patient care.
- Opportunities to participate in educational, training and audit activities.
- Research opportunities in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Opportunity to undertake the Associate Training Program- procedural (formerly called DRANZCOG) or the Associate Training program- advanced procedural (formerly called Advanced DRANZCOG) (for those on rural GP/ACCRM pathway).
- Additional opportunities may be available for participation in other specialist services such as pelvic floor disorders, gynae-oncology, infertility, and endoscopic surgery.
- At the completion of the term, applicants can expect to have received a broad exposure to the discipline of O&G in preparation for the FRANZCOG Integrated Training Program.
- Opportunities to work at a Junior Registrar level (leave cover etc).
- Support in their career aspirations, including application through the RANZCOG ITP Training Program National Selection process.
To be successful in this role, the following requirements must be met:
- Completed PGY2+ or above at time of application.
- Minimum 6 months prior clinical O&G experience.

The selection process for these positions is highly competitive. The positions are awarded on the basis of curriculum vitae, references and interview. Shortlisting for interview is based on CV and referee report with points awarded to relevant clinical experience, courses, academic awards/honours, research experience and other hospital involvement.
