About Barwon Health

With over 8,000 staff and more than 1,200 volunteers we provide services to our local community the G21 region which comprises the residents of the City of Greater Geelong, Colac Otway Shire, Golden Plains Shire, Borough of Queenscliff and Surf Coast Shire. Barwon Health has 1,016 beds across our sites, including 363 residential aged care beds.

We provide services from University Hospital Geelong, the McKellar Centre in North Geelong, Barwon Health North, Swanston Centre and Mental Health Community Hubs across the region.

We are one of four public radiation oncology providers in Victoria.

We have a public private partnership with Epworth Healthcare to help deliver surgery and day oncology

We are a major teaching hospital so have relationships with Deakin University, University of Melbourne and Monash University.

About the Role

As a PRESET Unaccredited Surgical Registrar, we aim to tailor your terms for your further surgical career and allow you to fulfil all pre-requisites to fulfil the requirements for SET training. PRESET registrars have the opportunity to have rotations in: Orthopaedics, Urology, Vascular, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery Trauma, Acute Surgical Unit, General Surgery, ICU, Alfred Trauma, Hamilton General Surgery and Warrnambool General Surgery. Rotations on Surgical Nights and Cover are also expected.

This is the opportunity for PRESETs to step up and take on a role with increased responsibility which is ideal prior to getting on to SET training.

There is the opportunity to work in rural services (Warrnambool, Hamilton and Colac) which can help with gaining extra experience as well as points for some surgical applications.

About The Culture

Barwon Health is the only regional hospital in Australia to offer a robotic service situated in the public hospital. Our PRESET group have the opportunity to be trained in robotic assisting.

Dr Kathryn McLeod is the PRESET supervisor whom you will along with closely to help you achieve your goals of getting on to a training program. She will help mentor you and meet up regularly to make sure you keep on track. Dr McLeod is a Urological Surgeon at Barwon, with her Masters of Surgical Education. She is a current PhD candidate focusing on improving remediation for surgical trainees. She is the current Chair of the Regional Training Board for VIC/TAS for the Urological Society for Australia and New Zealand.

Our educational program includes monthly teaching specifically for surgery, as well as additional educational opportunities for regular general surgery teaching.

There are many opportunities to participate in research collaboration groups and have access to statistician assistance. In addition to this, there is an Orthopaedic Interest sub-group as well as a Urology Research sub-group with regular research meetings.

There are teaching opportunities with Deakin University.

For those intending on sitting the GSSE, regular tutorials are run throughout the year.

There is help and mentoring for PRESETs throughout their application process as well as preparation for the surgical interviews.

On our PRESET committee, there is the opportunity for juniors to take on leadership positions.
