About the Role

Applications are invited from dynamic and enthusiastic Neonatal Fellows for positions in Newborn Services at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital. Newborn Services has positions for Fellows in Clinical Neonatology and Fellows in Point Of Care Ultrasound (POCUS).

The 12 month positions allow the applicants to develop and progress their skills in the care of the unwell newborn. The two POCUS fellow(s) will have training in point of care ultrasound with less time in clinical roles. The successful applicants will have at least 12 months of experience in a level 6 (or equivalent) neonatal intensive care unit.

All Fellow positions include training in the assessment and management of newborns in consultation with the duty neonatologist. In addition the successful candidates will develop leadership skills in the teaching and supervision of junior medical staff.

Neonatal POCUS Fellows

Newborn Services at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s, Sunshine Hospital is accredited for training in neonatal point of care ultrasound (POCUS) by the Australasian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM). The 12 month Neonatal POCUS fellow is an exciting position for trainees nearing completion to gain skills and qualifications in neonatal point-of-care ultrasound. All training will be provided in line with the curriculum for the Basic and Advanced Neonatal Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) provided through ASUM.

The Neonatal POCUS Fellow will also take part in the clinical roster.

The role of the Neonatal POCUS fellow will be to train in POCUS and contribute to the integrated 24/7 POCUS service of the unit. This will comprise protected time for POCUS training and supervision of POCUS in the acute clinical setting. In addition the Neonatal POCUS fellow will undertake clinical service in NICU and SCN under the supervision and direction of Duty Consultant or Head of Unit.

The positions comprise the following training opportunities within the Newborn Services Unit:

  • Undergo training in neonatal point of care cardiac, cranial, abdominal and lung ultrasound in keeping with the ASUM Neonatal CCPU curriculum under the supervision of ASUM accredited supervisors.
  • Develop knowledge in integrating information gained from POCUS into clinical practice.
  • Develop skills in research, in particular related to neonatal POCUS.
  • Provide and consolidate skills in the acute management of neonatal patients in the delivery room setting as well as later presentations of acutely ill newborns.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary neonatal follow up clinics.
  • Participate in unit educational and quality activities.

Neonatal Clinical Fellows

These are 12 month positions that will allow the applicant to develop and progress their skills in the care of the unwell newborn. The Neonatal Clinical Fellow will undertake clinical service in NICU, SCN and multidisciplinary Follow up clinics under the supervision and direction of Duty Consultant or Head of Unit.

The successful applicant will have at least 12 months of experience in a level 6 (or equivalent) neonatal intensive care unit. These positions are accredited for Advanced Training in Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine by the Royal Australian College of Physicians - for six months core perinatal training and 6 months non-core training.
