Who are we?
Established in 1991, Danila Dilba Health Service (DDHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation committed to providing culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care services and community development within the Biluru (Aboriginal) community of the Yilli Rreung (Greater Darwin) Region in the Northern Territory.
We work to address the social determinants of health including the broader issues that affect our people's health, through evidence-based research and public advocacy. We also work to empower individuals, families, and communities to optimise their health.
About the role
Trainee Elders Support Workers provide daily assistance to Elders, while studying towards Certificate III in Aged Care. They support Elders with social group activities, personal care, transport, day respite sessions, and domestic assistance.
Responsibilities:
- Study towards achieving Certificate III in Aged Care.
- Gain practical, culturally appropriate experience supporting Elders in the day respite centre, the community, and their homes.
- Follow Care Plans to support Elders to achieve their health goals and pursue their personal interests.
- Follow procedures and practices to work to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Standards.
- Establish respectful relationships with clients and their families.
- Receive training to provide social support in group settings and personal care services including assistance with nutrition, oral hygiene, and showering.
- Reliably follow a roster of scheduled appointments to deliver services to a variety of clients.
- Other duties as required, consistent with skills and experience, as directed by the relevant member of DDHS.
To be successful you will need:
Essential
- Willingness to enrol, attend and participate in Certificate III in Aged Care studies.
- Ability to apply a solid understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to communicate sensitively and effectively with clients and their families.
- Ability to apply formal learning in the workplace.
- Moderate computer skills to enter information into client files and complete incident reports.
- Ability to take direction and work under supervision.
Desirable
- Adaptable and flexible when things change.
- Enthusiasm for trialing new ideas in response to client feedback and research findings.
- Socially engaging with motivation to respectfully listen and learn from Elders.
- Resilient, calm, and reassuring to clients when things are not going perfectly to plan.
- Positive disposition in the workplace.
What we offer:
- 6 weeks annual leave per annum
- 5 days paid leave during our end of year shut down period (in addition to annual leave).
- Salary packaging of up to $15,990 per annum.
