Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer

  • Ongoing Full time or Part Time role
  • Salary: $38.55 to $44.32 per hour 11% superannuation
  • Location: Morwell, Victoria

Do you want to make a positive IMPACT for the community?

We are seeking an Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer to empower Latrobe City's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community by supporting reconciliation and self-determination.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person with:

  • Connections to the local community
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures
  • Strong communications and relationship-building skills
  • Experience planning ahead, evaluating projects and providing advice on different options
  • You do not need a formal qualification, but demonstrated experience working on community projects is a requirement.

This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010, and only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.

What are the main responsibilities?

  • Holding meetings with mob, Council committees like the Brayakaulung Advisory Committee and RAP Working Group, and community organisations.
  • Giving advice to Council about how to improve relationships, services and outcomes, based on community feedback and data.
  • Running community events and activities for special days like Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week.

What is the role and team like?

  • The role can either be part-time or full-time hours, with flexible start and finish times negotiable.
  • You will work with people who have roles like yours, supporting different priority groups like young people or people with disability, as well as community services like Libraries and Leisure Centres.
  • You will be supported to use the skills you have and receive training to build the skills you need to be successful.
  • The role is about giving advice and guidance to the organisation, not about leading all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander related work alone.
  • You will need a Police Check and a valid employee Working with Children Check. Council can assist you to get through the application process to obtain these.
