Overview

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) plays a vital role alongside clinical staff in ensuring the safe and culturally sensitive hospital journeys of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander patients within the Murray Mallee region. Their responsibilities encompass providing cultural support to patients

and their escorts, facilitating navigation through the health system from admission to discharge, and maintaining continuity of care by liaising with community health centres.

They assist in communicating health information effectively, giving sensitive consideration to cultural differences and language barriers,

ensuring patients understand medical procedures to maximise cooperation to their care.

Additionally, the AHLO coordinates transport arrangements, acts as a cultural consultant for RMCLHN staff to ensure culturally appropriate services, and advocates for the use of language interpreters when necessary. They also monitor and ensure the correct acknowledgment and recording of Aboriginality status for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

About You

  • Culturally sensitive communication and accountability with Aboriginal individuals, families, and communities
  • Effective verbal and written communication with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal individuals, health workers, and organisations
  • Development of supportive and collaborative relationships with Aboriginal communities and individuals
  • Collaboration with diverse health professionals, demonstrating autonomy, initiative, and judgment in achieving objectives

Essential Criteria

  • Significant experience in working with Aboriginal individuals, their families and communities
  • Experience in working in a health and multidisciplinary setting
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing, developing and maintaining effective networks, alliances and relationships with Aboriginal individuals, organisations and communities

Completion of Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or Certificate III in Practice or Community Care is desirable but not essential.
