About the role

The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Engagement Worker engages and develops relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with complex physical health and social support needs who face significant barriers to accessing services.

This is an identified position, therefore only Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.

Your duties include:

  • Participate in assertive street outreach activities
  • Act as an advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients/groups of clients as appropriate, particularly those who are homeless and/or have complex health and social wellness needs
  • Provide harm reduction education, advocacy, referral, needles/syringes and other injecting and disposal equipment to clients to support safer use and disposal through all modalities, onsite site, outreach, and dispensing machines
  • Link individuals into appropriate ongoing community services, including culturally specific, mental health, social support, and health services.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • A relevant tertiary qualification such as Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health worker, community development, health promotion, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officer, Social Work or equivalent experience in the housing, mental health, AOD, disability or welfare sectors, a lived experience is highly valued
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal health and culture and ability to communicate effectively with the client group

All appointments are made subject to a satisfactory Police Check, a Working With Children Check (WWCC), complete a Statutory Declaration, evidence of legal rights to work in Australia, and evidence of vaccination against COVID-19 (3 doses). Additionally, some roles will also require current AHPRA registration and/or NDIS Worker Screening Clearance.

Roles that are determined to be Risk Category A or B [staff that have direct and/or indirect contact with body substances and are at higher risk of occupational exposure to infections] will be required to provide evidence of immunisation assessment including Influenza prior to commencement [A] or within 12 weeks of commencement [B]. This is in accordance with the Victorian Minister of Health Mandatory Vaccination Orders for COVID-19 and legislated requirement for influenza vaccination.
