Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.
About the role
- To coordinate administrative support to Genetic Health Queensland to enable the provision of effective and appropriate service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and families.
- Genetic health services are playing an increasingly important role in improving human health. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are underrepresented in such services despite having higher prevalence of some genetically determined conditions and evidence of willingness to access these services. The Achieving Health Equity in Genetic Health (AEGH) for First Nations Australians project aims to improve the delivery of Genetic Health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This project explicitly focuses on working with the Genetic Health service partners to develop more effective models for meeting the needs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- In order to understand how models of current genetic service provision address the needs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland, the University of Melbourne is undertaking interviews with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander users (or their carers or guardians) of genetic services and reviewing administrative data to examine patterns of referral and attendance to genetic services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
- The current role sits within Genetic Health Queensland and will provide support during recruitment of patients and data collection for the AEGH project.
