The Opportunity

Economic Division provides advice and support to the Prime Minister and portfolio Ministers on the Australian economy and reforms to enhance our nation’s prosperity. We advise on a broad range of topics including tax policy, the financial system, industrial relations, productivity and fiscal policy.

Economic Division is seeking talented and energetic EL1 staff to join the Taxation, Financial Sector and Superannuation policy team. The team works closely with other agencies, particularly the Treasury and Finance to provide policy advice and analysis for the Prime Minister, portfolio Ministers and senior executives within the Department on the design and operation of the taxation system, and the regulation of the Financial Sector and superannuation system.

As a member of a small, but dynamic team you will have exposure to the development of strategic policy advice at the highest level of government, including Budget and Cabinet processes. You will also have the opportunity to work in partnership with officials both within the Department and beyond, to ensure the Prime Minister and Cabinet receive the best possible advice.

As a valued staff member, you will receive strengths-based support and mentoring, and will also be supported and encouraged to take on a leadership role within the branch, helping to support and motivate others in the team, engaging with the Executive, representing the Department at meetings and working independently with internal and external stakeholders.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will be a critical thinker, able to contribute their own ideas and to apply strong conceptual and analytical skills to a wide range of policy issues. We work in a dynamic and fast paced environment, so we are looking for people who can work under pressure and balance a number of competing priorities. Relevant experience in tax, superannuation or Financial Sector policy is desirable but we are also open to applicants with a proven ability to build specialist knowledge. Our ideal candidate will be expected to exercise initiative and judgement, possess good decision-making skills, and be motivated to deliver results.

The successful applicants will:

  • provide specialist, expert advice on more complex areas of policy and be experienced in providing and developing policy advice to senior executives, Ministers and their Offices.
  • be able to build relationships and influence senior executives and key internal stakeholders to deliver on shared outcomes and objectives.
  • be a team player, value individual differences and diversity, and effectively manage competing priorities to achieve team goals and project outcomes.
  • be an excellent written and verbal communicator, with the ability to prepare clear and concise written advice and reports.
  • have well developed leadership skills, including the ability to support others to independently solve problems, manage and prioritise deliverables and assist team members to balance work and personal needs.

In Economic Division we are committed to building a diverse workforce and strongly encourage applications from all people. Applicants with flexible work arrangements are also encouraged to apply. While some of us are economists, you don’t have to be to work here. Applicants with other qualifications and experience are very welcome.

Current vacancies are for an EL1 in the Taxation, Financial Sector and Superannuation policy team. However, a merit list of suitable candidates from this process may be used to fill other vacancies in the Branch, Division and Department over the next 18 months.
Eligibility

To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen.

The successful candidate will be required to be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check.
