About the positionWe are seeking a highly skilled AI Safety and Public Health Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a unique blend of medical, academic, and technical expertise, with a strong foundation in the Australian health system. The role requires a deep understanding of AI safety, including knowledge of Australian and international frameworks, legislation, standards, and compliance mechanisms, as well as expertise in the audit of AI systems.
The successful candidate will also have professional experience in human-centred design and the interaction between humans and technology. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective integration of AI technologies within healthcare settings, aiming to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiencies.
Primary responsibilities- Lead the development and implementation of AI safety protocols and standards within the health system, ensuring compliance with Australian and international regulations.
- Conduct regular audits of AI systems to identify potential risks and areas for improvement, ensuring the Safety and efficacy of technology applications in healthcare.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including clinicians, IT professionals, and Public Health experts, to integrate AI technologies in a manner that prioritizes patient Safety and wellbeing.
- Design and deliver training programs on AI Safety and human-technology interactions for healthcare professionals, fostering an environment of continuous learning and adaptation.
- Engage in ongoing research and policy development related to AI safety in healthcare, contributing to the advancement of the field both nationally and internationally.
- Provide expert guidance on the ethical implications of AI in healthcare, ensuring that human-centred design principles are at the forefront of technological developments.
The activities in this role may vary in accordance with work priorities and may shift in accordance with priorities. Flexibility, versatility and resourcefulness are essential.
Key selection criteria- Medical degree with specialist college qualifications;
- At least 10 years of clinical experience in the Australian health system;
- Academic qualifications in Public Health (minimum Master Level qualification);
- Demonstrated expertise in AI Safety, including familiarity with Australian and international frameworks, legislation, standards and compliance mechanisms;
- Experience in the audit of AI Systems;
- Proven understanding of the challenges and potential benefits related to integration of AI system into the Australian health system;
- Professional experience in human-centred design, and human and technology interactions;
- Excellent communication, leadership and project management skills;
- A commitment to ethical principles and the promotion of patient safety in the integration of AI technologies in healthcare;
- Prior experience with stakeholder engagement and management.
The position is based in Canberra or Melbourne with occasional travel required for conferences, workshops, and collaborative projects both within Australia and internationally.
