The Role
The AOD Counsellor (IYSMSS) will provide therapeutic interventions to the young people accessing the Integrated Youth Substance Misuse Specialist Service (Alban Place). Alban Place is an integrated model of care for young people aged 12 – 24 years of age with substance misuse issues. The service includes:
- Sobering Up services for young people who require a safe place to sober up
- Residential treatment for young people wanting to address their Alcohol or Other Drug use
- Outpatient Counselling Service
The following key responsibilities will ensure you contribute to the program meeting its objectives.
- Conduct bio-psychosocial assessments
- Develop therapeutic intervention plans for young people
- Support, motivate and encourage young people prior to entry to Alban Place, ensuring a successful transition from community into rehabilitation
- Apply thorough knowledge of therapeutic interventions including assessment, counselling, family work, referral and consultancy
- Apply motivational interviewing, CBT, ACT and Other techniques and brief therapy
- Undertake therapeutic interventions including assessment, counselling, family work, referral and consultancy

What you need to bring
Essential
- Valid Department of Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check.
- Certificate IV Alcohol & Other Drugs or equivalent
- Experience in delivering therapeutic AOD interventions
- Understanding of the impact of Mental Health on people using substances
- Ability to participate in on call roster, on-call allowances will apply as per the award
- Ability to do some work outside of standard hours when required
Desirable
- Experience working with young people in a residential setting
- Experience working with families confronted by Alcohol and Other Drugs
- Degree qualification in the human services such as Social Work, Psychology, Nursing or Occupational Therapy
- Valid Driver’s Licence
