The team
The Companies and Small Business team is the team primarily responsible for ASIC's role in relation to the regulation and supervision of Companies and Small Business to ensure sector adherence with the laws administered by ASIC and the promotion of market integrity.
The team's role is focused on corporate governance conduct and disclosure, financial reporting and audit quality, conduct of registered liquidators, and engagement with the Small Business sector.
The Companies and Small Business team conducts proactive surveillance and monitoring, considers applications for relief from legislative requirements, provides support to regulatory reform activities, and actively engages with relevant stakeholders to understand and respond to current and emerging industry issues.
The role
As an Analyst/Lawyer you will be accountable for:
  • Undertaking risk-based supervision and participating in thematic reviews of harms or problems across the sector.
  • Coordinating the collection of and analysing data and other information and identifying new ways to leverage data to deliver priorities.
  • Supporting the implementation of policy and law reform, including developing of new guidance, training, systems, and processes as required.
  • Assisting with the identification and implementation of effective regulatory strategies and interventions to deliver effective consumer and/or investor outcomes.
  • Assessing applications for relief from the legislation administered by ASIC to ensure quality outcomes that are legally sound, and consistent with ASIC policy and precedents.
  • Oversight of registration renewals, requests for suspensions and cancellations that relate to the sector.
  • Liaising and engaging with internal and external stakeholders on regulatory issues and encourage improvements of industry best practice.
  • Conducting research and analysis on a range of regulatory issues across the sector and conducting assessments of products and services, and risks across the sector.
  • Oversight of the registration renewals, requests for suspensions and cancellations that relate to the sector.
  • Maintaining ASIC's regulatory framework resources and maintaining a general understanding of ASIC's legal and regulatory tools.
  • Working collaboratively with other teams within ASIC on a broad range of enforcement and compliance matters.
About you
  • A relevant tertiary qualification and membership of relevant professional body.
  • Detailed knowledge of, or the ability to readily acquire knowledge of the sector and the key issues influencing the sector.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of ASIC's regulatory environment.
  • Experience assessing, challenging, and authenticating complex information, and making sound regulatory judgements.
  • A strong understanding of analysing quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Experience presenting information to different audiences through strong business writing and verbal communication.
  • Draft clear, accurate analysis and advice on complex matters, including practices, and policy as relevant to financial services and ASIC's regulatory environment.
  • Strategic thinking, analytical, investigative and research skills, including data analysis and presentation.
  • An ability to forge strategic relationships to ensure the effective use of all available data and information opportunities.
  • Experience assessing, verifying, and challenging complex information, and making sound regulatory judgements.
  • Ability to understand priorities and adjust work schedule to meet deadlines and ensure the delivery of effective and timely outcomes.
