The team

The Companies and Small Business team is the team primarily responsible for ASIC's role in relation to the regulation and supervision of Companies and Small Business to ensure sector adherence with the laws administered by ASIC and the promotion of market integrity.

The team's role is focused on corporate governance conduct and disclosure, financial reporting and audit quality, conduct of registered liquidators, and engagement with the Small Business sector.

The Companies and Small Business team conducts proactive surveillance and monitoring, considers applications for relief from legislative requirements, provides support to regulatory reform activities, and actively engages with relevant stakeholders to understand and respond to current and emerging industry issues.

The role

As a Senior Analyst/Lawyer you will be accountable for:

  • Leading risk-based supervision (e.g., review and monitoring) projects.
  • Collaborating with the Senior Manager to lead or conduct thematic reviews and/or surveillances.
  • Leading and managing sector engagement initiatives alongside and in collaboration with other team members.
  • Leading and identifying new ways to utilise data for evidence-based decision making in regulatory work.
  • Collaborating with the Sector Leadership team in the development of sector strategy and priorities.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Managing or assisting with the implementation of policy and law reform, in collaboration with other ASIC teams.
  • Identifying potential areas for law reform and assisting in the law reform projects.
  • Supporting or leading the identification and implementation of effective regulatory strategies and interventions to deliver appropriate consumer and/or investor outcomes.
  • Contributing to ASIC's public messaging to educate and set expectations for our regulated populations that are proportionate to their size and market exposure.
  • Leading and participating in project teams on emerging issues across the sector.
  • Creating a range of written communication materials, including reports, presentations, briefing notes and website content.
  • Mentoring and supervising work of others, as required, to ensure the delivery of quality outcomes.
  • Developing and maintaining knowledge of ASIC's regulatory framework.
  • Providing high level technical expertise and sound strategic judgement in managing complex and/or sensitive matters.
  • Supervising and assessing applications for relief from the legislation administer by ASIC.
  • Delivering efficient and timely expert administration support, governance, resource management, business planning and data reporting services to other teams within ASIC.

About you

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and membership of relevant professional body.
  • Knowledge of the Australian financial services industry generally and specifically from a regulatory, product, operations, risk, or client service viewpoint.
  • In-depth understanding of the sector, knowledge of legislation relevant to the sector, (including the Corporations Act), and professional, accounting and auditing standards.
  • Experience analysing and considering the broader organisational, industry and environmental context to develop sound and practical solutions to interpreting and applying legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability in delivering strategic priorities through stakeholder engagement and innovative solutions.
  • Proven use of strategic thinking and analytical skills, identifying emerging trends and risk areas.
  • Experience delivering results in a complex business environment through a commitment to quality outcomes, managing risks, and the efficient use of resources.
  • Superior writing and drafting skills, and the ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner.
  • Strategic thinking, analytical, investigative and research skills, including data analysis and presentation.
  • An understanding of the benefits in developing strategic relationships that partner to ensure the effective use of all available data and information opportunities.
  • Highly developed conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills as well as drawing reasoned influences from qualitative and quantitative data and to reach robust and practical conclusions.
  • Senior stakeholder management experience including influencing and utilising industry networks.
  • Strong organisational, project management and complex problem-solving skills.
