The Role
AUKUS Advanced Capabilities (AAC) Division and Defence Industry Policy (DIP) Division are looking for a number of Policy Officers to contribute to Defence's key policy functions to protect and further Australia's national interests.

The Policy Officer roles spread across these two Division are highly varied.
Your role could be to contribute to strengthening Australias national security; including roles where you might use your policy skills to support Defences international engagement, help build a sovereign industrial base, drive Defence’s deterrence by denial strategy in the technology, industrial or regulatory domains, or support Defence’s contribution to Pillar 2 of the AUKUS partnership – accelerating development of advanced capabilities for the warfighter.

You will have the opportunity to work across a broad range of stakeholders in government and engage with counterparts internationally, including in the United States, United Kingdom. There may be opportunities for domestic and international travel.

Vacancies are in the following teams:

Policy and Strategy (AAC Division)
The AUKUS Policy and Strategy team leads Australia’s contributions to the strategy underpinning the multi-generational AUKUS partnership. You will play a role in shaping the future of the partnership from a Pillar II perspective, working across central agencies in Canberra, international posts and with UK and US counterparts to evolve trilateral ambitions and goals. The team also oversees policy on the enabling functions for Pillar II. You will have opportunities to support AUKUS participation in global defence trade shows, and engagements with industry and research institutions, and progress the tenor of our conversation with these key partners. You will also help drive signature Pillar II innovation programs, including the AUKUS Innovation Challenge Series in partnership with the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator. 

Advocacy and International Engagement (AAC Division)
The International Engagement and Advocacy section is a dynamic and fast-paced team that works at the cutting edge of Defence International Policy to deliver a high profile Government priority.  You will contribute to shaping the international settings that support defence interests in AUKUS Pillar II.  AUKUS represents a once in a generation shift in how Australia collaborates with allies and close partners on capability delivery to support deterrence and regional security. You will work with stakeholders across Defence, the Australian Submarine Agency, DFAT, and Prime Minister and Cabinet, international posts and the UK and US. 

AUKUS Capabilities (AAC Division)
The AUKUS Capabilities Team works at the coalface with international partners and our Defence Force to drive capability development in AI, Quantum, hypersonics, electronic warfare, undersea warfare and cyber – all critical emerging technologies for Defence forces. The capabilities team engages closely with capability managers in Air Force, Army, Navy and the Defence Science and Technology Group to deliver capabilities to the warfighter at pace. As we deliver AUKUS Pillar II, there will be numerous opportunities to see these advanced capabilities in action.    
                 
Defence International Industry Collaboration & Engagement (DIP Division)
The Defence International Industrial Collaboration and Engagement team has a key role in supporting Defences approach to deterrence by denial. Integrating our industrial base will strengthen Australia’s ability to withstand, endure, and recover from disruption. It will increase our resilience, and those of our partners, to coercion. The team works across the Defence Enterprise and with government partners, in particular Austrade, to identify opportunities and barriers to collaboration to inform policy approaches. The team also delivers tailored international engagements including policy dialogues and trade missions.

Defence International Industry Collaboration & Engagement – US & UK (DIP Division)
The Defence International Industry Collaboration & Engagement - US & UK team supports a number of key Defence objectives consistent with Australias national interest. The team promotes industrial collaboration and engagement, bilaterally and trilaterally with AUKUS Partners to further Australia’s strategic and international objectives, with a focus on Advanced Capabilities and closer industrial base collaboration the Indo-Pacific to contribute to Australia’s deterrence through denial posture. Our team is the Australian lead for the AUKUS Advanced Capabilities industry engagement, the National Technology Industrial Base forum and the Australia-United Kingdom Defence Industry Dialogue.

AUKUS Technology Transfer (DIP Division)
The AUKUS Technology Transfer team is responsible for enhancing technology transfer, information sharing and industrial integration among and between AUKUS partners. The team engages widely with internal and external stakeholders, including across the Australian Government, US and UK Governments, industry, higher education and research sectors to identify opportunities to progress the ground-breaking reform of technology transfer and information sharing, and conducts research into policy and legislative settings and development novel policy solutions. In addition, the team delivers key government objectives to enhance interoperability, interchangeability, supply chain security and resilience among AUKUS partners. This includes providing high quality policy advice to Ministers, Posts Washington and London, Defence seniors and drafting ministerial products.

About our Team
The Australia United Kingdom Unites States (AUKUS) Advanced Capabilities Division is responsible for leading Australia’s contribution to Pillar II of the AUKUS partnership. We work closely with areas across Defence, Government and international partners to harness technological advances that will help maintain Australia’s capability edge and enhance strategic deterrence in our region. Under Advanced Capabilities, we are building a capability partnership that will fast track the delivery of leading-edge warfighting capabilities into the hands of the ADF.

Defence Industry Policy Division shapes Defence’s international engagement with industry, supporting deterrence by denial through industrial collaboration. We drive and implement the Government’s policies to expand international industrial engagement, and regulate the export of military and dual-use goods and technologies consistent with Australia’s national interests and international obligations.
