APS6 IFA - $100,925 - $105,788
Salaries in the department are provided through its Enterprise Agreement and supporting s.24(1) Determination. They may also be provided through Individual Flexibility Arrangements (IFA).
The department has an Individual Flexibility Arrangement (IFA) Framework applicable to employees at the APS6 and Executive Levels. Employees at these classifications may be eligible to receive salaries set out in the IFA Framework which are above those set out in the Enterprise Agreement and supporting s.24(1) Determination.
These IFAs can be negotiated prior to commencement and the IFA will be provided to staff on commencement with the department.

Our preference is for candidates to be located in Canberra, however we want to recruit the best people to our Group, no matter where they are located. We support flexible work arrangements including, where appropriate, the opportunity to work remotely from one of our other departmental offices or remotely via home-based work.
Should the successful candidate reside in a location where the department does not currently have office space, there will be a requirement to be engaged remotely via a home-based work arrangement.
The opportunities we have available
We have several APS5 and APS6 roles available across BITRE in the following research areas:
The Aviation Statistics team work with airlines, aircraft operators and airline data to develop statistical Data and publications, supporting the policy and research work of the Department, portfolio agencies, the aviation industry and sharing data with the general public. The team collates and analyses information relating to international, domestic and general aviation aircraft activity, domestic on-time performance, airport traffic and domestic airfare indexes for public release and to support policy development.
The Urban Research team focuses on Australian cities and significant urban areas. The team researches issues affecting Australia's urban areas and produces research reports and data products to support policy analysis for urban areas.
The Infrastructure and Surface Transport Statistics team produces statistics on maritime and rail transport and infrastructure expenditure, as well as compiling the annual Australian Infrastructure and Transport Statistics Yearbook. Our statistics are compiled primarily using data from industry, and are used to support infrastructure and transport policy and programs, including within the Department by the Surface Transport Emissions and Policy Division and the Infrastructure Divisions.
The Transport Modelling and Research section produces road transport-related statistics and undertakes research into the drivers of current Australian transport activity, the likely future outlook for the domestic transport sector, and the performance of Australia's current transport infrastructure and likely future infrastructure investment needs. The section also provides Data and analytical support to other areas of the Department.

We are seeking candidates who can work both independently and within a team with the ability to make decisions using sound judgement, expertise and knowledge. We are seeking people to fill either APS 5 and APS 6 vacancies, with the position offered based on the type and length of experience relevant to the role. As a rough guide, the APS5 role will be suitable for a person with 1-3 years of data collection/analysis experience and the APS6 role would be suitable for a person with a minimum of 2-3 years of data collection/analysis experience. We will develop a merit list from this round to fill future vacancies across BITRE.

  • Achieve results and quality outcomes through demonstrated strong organisational and time management skills and well-developed conceptual and analytical skills. Intermediate or advanced Excel skills, and experience with PowerBI, SAS, R, Python, SQL or similar software in a data analysis capacity will position you well to succeed in these roles.
  • Communicate effectively both in writing and orally, delivering information in a variety of formats for a range of audiences.
  • Collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders to negotiate positive and productive outcomes.
  • Think strategically, evaluating complex information from a variety of sources to produce accurate reports, briefs and publications that address the needs of target audiences.

The key duties of the position include
What will you do?

The positions would suit individuals with educational qualifications in a relevant field, such as economics, commerce, data science, computer science, information technology, mathematics, statistics or a related field of science or social science.
