About the Role This is an exciting opportunity for a Reference Archivist to join our team and provide frontline services and support researchers at the University of Melbourne Archives (UMA).  

You'll manage requests, and inquiries, and ensure smooth access to our rich collection. Your tasks include handling reference requests, aiding digitisation efforts, and maintaining collection integrity. Excitingly, you'll also assist with learning and teaching initiatives, adding depth to your role.

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Take ownership on all public research enquiries regarding use of the University of Melbourne Archives via a variety of channels 
  • Oversight of the retrieval and return of collection items, tracking item movement correctly using collection management software and ASC processes and standards. 
  • Protect collection material through initial assessments of condition. 
  • Actively foster and support best practice in user experience for a diverse range of clients of Archives and Special Collections. 

Who we are looking for 
We're looking for people who demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to provide excellent customer service. Additionally, you should be a team player capable of liaising with stakeholders.

You will also have: 

  • Qualifications in Archives, Records and Information Management, or related discipline, and/or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience 
  • Experience in archives, records, information management or related field, with good understanding of archival practice and industry standards, and their practical application in large archives 
  • Knowledge and experience of archival collection management systems and reference management systems 
  • Interest in and a passion for applying in practice, contemporary discussions on archival theory
