Do you have irrigation and cropping skills and want to experience station life?
This is the opportunity for you; an experienced family business is looking for an Assistant Grower to work alongside their Cropping Manager to undertake and oversee the day-to-day operations of their 150Ha Watermelon enterprise located on a Horticultural Station approximately 200 kilometres south of Broome, WA.
A strategic cropping program allows the continual production of watermelons for domestic and international markets between February and early December – allowing you to travel and explore over the Christmas and New Year periods annually. Ideally, you will have previous experience and strong knowledge of drip irrigation systems and horticultural row cropping practices, including fertigation. However, those with general irrigation or agronomy/cropping knowledge are encouraged to apply, as training can be provided for those with the right attitude and commitment to the program.
Your daily activities may include monitoring the drip irrigation systems, bud checking, feeding, etc., assisting in coordinating staff, inventory, machinery, and general maintenance and repair of the fleet and station infrastructure. Due to the station's location, general mechanical aptitude and fabrication skills will also be valued. The intensive cropping plan ensures that the entire crop is staggered, providing continual picking opportunities. You will require strong attention to detail and commitment to your role as you conduct crop inspections and report findings to the crop manager and agronomist, as well as a long roster.

The large staff team is individually accommodated in dongas with decks attached, and all meals are provided by the station cook, providing a social atmosphere in a very remote location.

The Ideal Candidate
Ideally, you will have previous row crop experience or general cropping and irrigation knowledge, as well as the following attributes:
- Fertigation knowledge (desirable)
- Chemical Certificate
- Machinery operation experience
- Mechanical aptitude and fabrication skills
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Keen observation skills
- Basic understanding of agronomy
- Willingness to learn.
- Ability to live and work in a remote location.
