Expression of Interest – Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research Infrastructure) 0.6FTE

Appropriately qualified and experienced academic staff are invited to submit their Expression of Interest for the role of Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research Infrastructure).
The newly created role of Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure) (APVCRI) is a senior leadership role at the University. The APVCRI will report to and support the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Enterprise and International) in the management of the Research Portfolio, and in achieving the objectives of the University’s Sustain Success Strategy and the Research, Enterprise and International Strategy.
The APVCRI will work across the Division of Research, Enterprise and International (DREI) to deliver exceptional service to and support of Western’s researchers and research. The APVCRI will support Western’s commitment to facilitating and providing access to world-class platforms, facilities, and infrastructure to enable excellent, interdisciplinary and impactful research that meets the needs of the University’s research agenda.
The WSU shared Research Infrastructure model promotes collaborative use of equipment, expertise, facilities and services as well as coordinated access to major national and international research facilities or consortia.
The APVCRI will be responsible for strategy, policy, and advice relating to Research Infrastructure. The portfolio will also be responsible for the provision of shared research facilities and equipment, funding schemes, and associated technology services.
The APVCRI will be expected to work collaboratively with the relevant University community to lead research development and delivery across the University.
Specific accountabilities of this role include:
  • Work with the Senior Manager infrastructure and oversee the WSU shared research facilities, including the AMRF, Mass Spec, Next Genome Sequencer, BMRF and the Protected Cropping Facility.
  • Oversee the Research Technology Services, such as High Performance Computing(HPC), Data Management and Initiatives (including Training, and policies related to access and use) and the participation with the Australian Research Data Commons.
  • Co-ordinate research capital investment to ensure that facilities remain fit for purpose, and that contents of controlled environments are appropriately housed and insured. Coordination of WSU’s involvement in major competitive bids for Infrastructure, such as ARC LIEF and the NSW/ACT DVCR’s infrastructure Working Group.
  • Coordination of WSU’s involvement in Research Infrastructure at a state, national and international level, such as National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy initiatives as a representative on the NIF Participant Council, and APPF. Work with the Program Manager Digital Acceleration to ensure the delivery of the Research Management Systems
  • Liaise with Service Delivery Manager – IT and Digital Services to enhance accessibility, responsiveness and fit for purpose ITDS Research Infrastructure.
  • Provide strategic advice to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Enterprise and International) on Research Infrastructure priorities, strategies, and mechanisms for development, including the Pipeline for Research Investment and the chairing of the Technical Advisory Cttee.
  • Deputise for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Enterprise and International) in all aspects of the research portfolio, as and when required.
Committee and Board Membership
  • Membership of University Committees including the University Research Committee and others as required.
  • Represent the University externally at board and committee level, and in international research consortia, as required.
  • Represent the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Enterprise and International) as required such as at Universities Australia and NSW Deputy and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Committees.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the role of APVCR, applicants must:
  • Currently hold the title of Associate Professor or above:
  • Have an internationally recognised research track record;
  • Possess a broad understanding of state and national infrastructure funding;
  • Understanding of, and ability to anticipate, the changing Research Infrastructure needs of the University;
  • Ability to work collaboratively across institutions to develop and leverage shared Research Infrastructure;
  • Reflect the ability to inspire teams and encourage shared commitment; and
  • Be an innovative and strategic thinker and operator.
This is a fixed-term appointment for 2 years, carried out at 0.6 FTE (subject to individual circumstances, you will retain your substantive position concurrently). This position will require you to attend the Penrith Campus, however multi-campus travel is essential.
