The Opportunity

  • Bring your organisational skills and passion for science into a diverse role
  • Support a range of projects within the Atmospheric Composition & Chemistry Group
  • Grow your career with the truly supportive team at CSIRO – Australia’s National Science Agency!

Interested in joining a team of international leaders in atmospheric chemistry observations and modelling, and building a career in impactful research? We are currently seeking a motivated early-career Experimental Scientist to join our team, and it could be the opportunity you’re looking for!

As the Atmospheric Trace Gas Experimental Scientist, you will be part of the CSIRO Climate Science Centre, and our dynamic Atmospheric Composition and Chemistry (ACC) Group. The team brings together capability in the observation of Trace Gases, particulate matter and chemical processes of the atmosphere, and the transport and chemical modelling required to interpret these data. This is performed at global to regional and urban scales, and timescales from minutes to millennia.

Joining our GASLAB (Global Atmospheric Sampling LABoratory) Team in Aspendale, you will play a vital role in supporting a number of key research projects, including the Kennaook/Cape Grim Science Program. Primarily, you will support the ongoing delivery of high-quality data from these various research projects, by providing logistical support, data collection & analysis assistance, and helping with the operation of various greenhouse gas measurement analytical instrumentation. This role requires someone who wants to be part of a high-performing team, and has a strong drive to deliver science in support of the Paris Agreement.

This ongoing, diverse role will be a great growth opportunity for an early-career scientist with strong attention to detail, well-developed organisational skills, interest for logistics, and a passion for climate science. So, if you have a keen interest in atmospheric science and looking for an opportunity to collaborate with a range of research and industry leaders, we would love to hear from you! CSIRO offers you excellent career development and professional support, and the opportunity to collaborate with a range of industry and research experts!

Your duties will include:

  • Providing logistical support to the global flask and in situ measurement programs, including planning, communication with collaborating institutions (BoM, AAD, GNS NZ) and organisation of freight. (This aspect of the role requires considerable organizational and adaptive abilities as Antarctic schedules are highly changeable).
  • Supporting the consistent use of data recording and entry systems.
  • Operating and/or supporting the operation of various greenhouse gas measurement analytical instrumentation, including gas chromatographers (GC), in situ spectroscopic analysers and isotope ratio mass spectrometers.
  • Performing on-going, data review for quality control, both on the discrete GC measurements and for the continuous data from in situ spectroscopic analysers. (This element of the role requires great attention to detail, thorough work practices, commitment to quality, and persistence).
  • Participating in routine field trips (to Cape Schanck) to produce compressed air calibration standards for our internal operations and for external customers, and to other field sites as required.
  • Various other duties as required.

Location: Aspendale (Melbourne), VIC

Salary: AU$68K – AU$86K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Indefinite; Full-time

Reference: 95399

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree with a major in the physical sciences including atmospheric science, chemistry, physics or earth sciences, OR equivalent work experience in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience in the operation of instrumentation for quantitative analysis of chemical species in the gas phase.
  • Proven experience in the processing and/or quality control of observational data, with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • High degree of organisation and self-motivation.
  • Demonstrated ability to document methods for adoption by other users.
  • A current (or willingness to attain) a Working with Children/Vulnerable People check due to broad public interest in the work and the likelihood of hosting students.
