Are you a recent Year 12 graduate (or about to be) who wants to develop your skills before pursuing study, or take the time to think about your career direction? Or have you been thinking about an aviation job in the Air Force but aren’t sure it’s right for you? Maybe you just want a break from your studies or current job to travel and challenge yourself?
The Air Force Gap Year - Aviation stream program provides young Australians who meet officer entry requirements with an opportunity to broaden their life experience with only a one-year commitment. The program offers a 'try before you buy' experience of Air Force training and lifestyle for young men and women, without any obligation to serve beyond the program period.
In this varied and rewarding role, you will be embedded in a flying squadron operations room where you will be supporting the team providing specialist air planning and coordination support to aircrew.
A core element of the Air Force Gap Year - Aviation experience is a four-day trip to RAAF Base East Sale to undertake the Aviation Screening Program at the Aviation Candidate Management Centre (ACMC). During your time at ACMC, you will undergo employment suitability testing for Officer Aviation roles. During your visit, will find out what Officer Aviation options you are eligible to apply for if you wish to stay on after you complete your Gap Year. Participants in this program are not confined to only applying for Officer Aviation roles either. You may wish to consider other officer or enlisted roles, including studying at ADFA.
If you enjoy multi-tasking, have great attention to detail and are an excellent communicator, this could be a great option for you. The working conditions for this role can vary significantly as it depends upon the flying squadron you are posted to. Most of the time you would be working in a comfortable office-style environment but may find yourself in more austere environments if your squadron is deployed on an exercise. The work routine can include working shifts between 8 to 12 hours long during the day or night. If your squadron has aircraft airborne on a mission, anytime of the day, the operations team supporting them on back at home base are working too.
Throughout your training, you will be supported by professional and enthusiastic Air Force personnel who will provide the guidance and mentorship necessary for you to achieve your goals.
