Job description

Tired of big cities?  Want to start your days sitting on your deck in the sun, enjoying a cup of coffee and listening to the birds?  Or would you rather have a surf or a walk along the sand before work?  Then here is your opportunity to work in a busy hospital situated on the lower end of the Gold Coast.  Wonderful beaches, world heritage-listed national parks, hinterland villages, great food and fine wine, and excellent public and private schools are all waiting for you in Tweed and the North Coast area.

We will be moving to the new Tweed Valley Hospital (TVH) in early 2024 so here is your opportunity to work in a new hospital with increased services and specialties. This is the largest regional capital health investment funded entirely by the NSW Government.

A great opportunity exists to be part of the new state-of-the-art hospital, with more beds and increased healthcare services.  TVH will be a major referral hospital at the heart of the network of hospitals and health facilities across the Tweed Byron region.  For more information, please visit https://www.tweedvalleyhospital.health.nsw.gov.au/

TVH will include:

  • more operating theatres and recovery spaces
  • expanded emergency department
  • enhanced medical, surgical and mental health services
  • enhanced ambulatory care services including more outpatient clinics
  • new interventional cardiology service
  • new radiotherapy service as part of a new integrated cancer care service.

TVH will be a major referral hospital at the heart of the network of hospitals and health facilities across the Tweed-Byron region. It will provide the health services required to meet the needs of the growing population of the region beyond 2032.

The development will provide the community access to more health services closer to home, which will enable patients to remain near family, friends and existing support networks. It will reduce the need for 5,000 patients to travel outside the region each year to receive treatment.

The Tweed Hospital is characterised by friendly relations within the staffing structure and we are a cohesive and happy team, united by our desire to care for others.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) is to provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment in inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisations within the Network.
Basic Physician Training roles consist of rotations through medical departments, working under an appropriate level of supervision by consultants.  Rotations have different levels of responsibility and team structures.  BPTs will gain increasing clinical autonomy and accountability as team leaders throughout the course of the three-year training program, building on their skills and attributes with the goal of entering an Advanced Training program.

BPTs undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with the treating physician when appropriate, in the following activities:
  • Clinically assess patients, incorporating consultation/history taking, examination, and formulation of a differential diagnosis and management plans
  • Discuss diagnoses and management plans with patients and their families or carers
  • Document the progress of patients in multiple settings
  • Prescribe medications tailored to patients’ needs and conditions
  • Transfer care of patients
  • Choose, organise and interpret investigations
  • Assess and manage acutely unwell patients
  • Plan, prepare for, perform, and provide after care for important procedures
  1. MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. This role requires eligibility for or current registration as a Basic Physician Trainee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and intent to obtain Fellowship of the RACP. What is your current RACP status?
  3. Qualifications and experience as outlined in the Essential Requirements for the role.
  4. Demonstrated recent relevant experience in clinical medicine and ability to work in a complex clinical environment.
  5. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealings with patients, team members and supervisors.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, teaching, research, quality improvement and clinical leadership in medicine.
  7. Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills in a clinical setting within a multidisciplinary team.
  8. Proven ability to apply clinical knowledge and concepts in practical situations in the context of multiple competing priorities.
