The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) WA is the state's leading voice in animal welfare.  On an average day, we employ around 100 staff and we have the support of an amazing group of volunteers.  Together, our team works diligently toward preventing animal cruelty.

About this opportunity

This rare and exciting position is responsible for conducting Animal Behaviour Assessments and Animal Behaviour Modification at the RSPCA WA Animal Care Centre in Malaga. As key team members of the shelter environment, the Behavioural Trainers/ Handlers are also heavily involved in providing training in animal behaviour, handling and socialisation to the shelter staff, volunteers and other team members. 

About You

We are looking for an experienced positive reinforcement-based trainer. Someone with qualifications in animal training or animal behaviour (such as Delta or equivalent) will be highly regarded. The role is offered on a casual basis. Our small team is highly experienced, capable and great to work with. A strong passion for science-based, positive training methods and fear free handling/care will be viewed highly. 

Duties

  • Conduct the behaviour assessment of each animal entering RSPCA WA's care, using RSPCA Behaviour Assessment Guidelines in order to make recommendations about suitability for rehoming or release.
  • Provide, record and carry out behaviour modification programs for individuals.
  • Organise social interactions with appropriate shelter animals to ensure they maintain and develop their social skills.
  • Provide positive reinforcement-based animal behaviour and handling training to staff and volunteers as required.
  • Provide phone consultations on behaviour concerns for the general public, provide phone and 1 on 1 consultations for recent adopters and foster carers, and refer to external professional groups as required.
  • Liaise with other teams within the shelter.
  • Work within Work Health and Safety and Company policies.
  • Work in line with our organisational values and bring a positive attitude to work each day.

Skills & experience

  • Appropriate qualifications in animal behaviour using positive reinforcement training techniques, or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years' experience in dog training and/or behaviour modification, using positive reinforcement, preferably in a shelter environment.
  • Significant experience with preparing, implementing and adapting animal behaviour modification programs as required.
  • Good communication skills and an interest in sharing your knowledge.
  • Commitment to maintaining the highest levels of animal care.
  • Display a high level of resilience and manage stressful situations professionally.
  • Experienced and behaviour knowledge around different species is beneficial.
